Say "P85D" to Tesla owners and fans, and you will see the drooling and twitching and heavy breathing and lustful stares--and more drooling--that Tesla's fastest, highest-performance electric car brings.
The same happens with the word "Hellcat" for fans of high-powered Hemi V-8 performance.
Now, courtesy of two owners--each convinced that their car is the fastest, baddest beast on the road--we know what happens when the two cars face off on the drag strip.
Two days ago at Palm Beach International Raceway, a Tesla Model S P85D and a 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat competed in the traditional quarter-mile drag race.
Hint: It's no contest. At all. And the quieter car wins decisively.

Actually, with bile in my mouth, I can see that it could be a nice commuter car technology. If you do 40 miles a day and don’t have much freezing weather, and that’s all. Might be cool. I drove a Prius rental once and was very surprised at the roominess and speed. But then after LOTS of driving, I was blown away at how little fuel I had used.
What I really don’t understand is why they don’t offer a hybrid. Maybe a -seriously- slanted towards the electric side hybrid.
I could accept a car that had a gasoline engine, or a very small TDi alternative that moved me along at 55 only or some such. Make it where it would have to be selected or only kicked in when battery state went below a certain level. And then it could, gasp,,charge itself!
But I just wont ever be able to bring myself to buy one that leaves me stranded, or unable to travel normally.

The Tesla smoke and mirrors has always been about Musk cashing out by unloading the company to General Motors or Volkswagen or someone bigger who can absorb the losses for some kind of crony capitalist gain.
I still haven’t seen a life-cycle apples-to-apples energy comparison between gas/diesel and electric vehicles. I bet those batteries are a bitch environmentally on both the manufacturing and recycling end, but don’t know.
I’m all for electric cars as long as we build enough coal fired power plants to keep the price of electricity down and the availability matching demand.

Oh, it wasn’t capitalism. It was state socialism in pursuit of the green agenda. I can talk about the machine itself and even note that it seems well built for what it is, while still being clear that if the government was your primary investor at some point, it was socialism, not capitalism.

What propagates faster and can be better controlled/contained, chemical combustion or a rotating magnetic field? No transmission is the icing on the cake. The physics dictate that electrics are the future.

I think you are creating a false dichotomy. I'm not saying that electric cars can replace all gasoline cars today. Obviously recharge times need to improve before that can happen. Currently you can recharge a Tesla to 80% in 30 minutes, but that is not fast enough to put gasoline cars out to pasture.
That does not mean that electric cars of today don't have their place. It is not an either / or scenario. For a two-car family, having an electric car like the Nissan Leaf for commuting can be very practical. Furthermore, extended range electric cars, like the Chevy Volt, Ford Fusion Energi, and Ford C-Max Energi, allow you to do your daily driving on electric while still having a gasoline engine for longer trips.
All I am saying is that conservatives don't need to see electric cars as the enemy. Unfortunately, Obama sat in a Volt once for a photo op and conservatives have been using it as a political punching bag ever since. Most don't even realize that the Volt started development during the Bush administration and that it was Bush who first signed the $7,500 tax credit into law.

Its my problem with those of you who make this argument. Tesla is not another GM or Solyndra. Tesla is going to become very successful and Liberals are going to credit state socialism when we should be crediting Capitalism. Whatever government help Tesla get its tiny compared to private money

My main concern is resale value in the sense of buying a $1500 used car and driving it for another 5 years with minimal maintenance. That won’t be an electric car.

That’s what I’ve heard on one of the car shows in LA. And if you ever need to replace the battery be sure to bring a lot of money.
Not without a power grid to power them and the EPA are quite busy boxing people in...
I’ve read lots of reviews on Tesla Model S and its by far the best car on the market. I want one and its not because I share Leftist’s view on the environment, its simply a great car. Not all electric cars are bad just as not all gas cars are great. Don’t simply dismiss Tesla’s electric cars simply because GM electric cars are shit
