During Robert E. Lee's 100th birthday in 1907, Charles Francis Adams, Jr., a former Union Commander and grandson of US President John Quincy Adams, spoke in tribute to Robert E. Lee at Washington and Lee College's Lee Chapel in Lexington, Virginia. His speech was printed in both Northern and Southern newspapers and is said to had lifted Lee to a renewed respect among the American people.

So how many slaves have your ancestors kept? PS, great nym ... unwashed ....
I am a yankee but I have read much about Robert E Lee. My hat is off to him, a great and noble God fearing man. He also ran circles around the union generals with far fewer men and supplies. I hope someday to visit his resting place. Both he and Grant later in life wished they had not seen what they did in war. Lee loved his years as college president and did much for the confederate veterans to help them back into society. I am glad to honor his birthday.
Now you’re just being an ass.
The south might have won the war in 1862 but for Jackson's terrible showing in the Seven Days Battles. Jackson could not get along with his fellow generals and could naver have been more than a corps commander IMO.
Is my family not "American?"
Lee was a man who betrayed his oath as a graduate of West Point to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States, Lee not only took up arms against his country but also arguably, by his participation, caused untold death and destruction and the elongation of the War of Secession.
Thank you and Good Day.
I don’t suppose you have any evidence to support that statement do you?
And don’t say: “he lost”. Had Lee been in Grants position the war would not have lasted as long as it did.

No use arguing with a southern hating POS like yourself.
Agreed. Lee was a murderous traitor and nothing will remove that fact.
Forth from its scabbard, pure and bright,
Flashed the sword of Lee!
Far in the front of the deadly fight,
High o'er the brave in the cause of Right
Its stainless sheen, like a beacon light,
Led us to Victory!
Out of its scabbard, where, full long,
It slumbered peacefully,
Roused from its rest by the battle's song,
Shielding the feeble, smiting the strong,
Guarding the right, avenging the wrong,
Gleamed the sword of Lee!
Forth from its scabbard, high in the air
Beneath Virginia's sky--
And they who saw it gleaming there,
And knew who bore it, knelt to swear
That where that sword led they would dare
To follow--and to die!
Out of its scabbard! Never hand
Waved sword from stain as free,
Nor purer sword led braver band,
Nor braver bled for a brighter land,
Nor brighter land had a cause so grand,
Nor cause a chief like Lee!
Forth from its scabbard! How we prayed
That sword might victor be;
And when our triumph was delayed,
And many a heart grew sore afraid,
We still hoped on while gleamed the blade
Of noble Robert Lee!
Forth from its scabbard all in vain
Bright flashed the sword of Lee;
'Tis shrouded now in its sheath again,
It sleeps the sleep of our noble slain,
Defeated, yet without stain,
Proudly and peacefully!
I am sure God honors Lee. Lincoln, not so much. Not to mention that liberals love Lincoln to prove the point.
Thanks for the well done article.
Now duck for those on FR who will tell you all the bad things R.E. Lee has done (and it comes from Yankees as well as Southerners).....Some folks just can’t give it a rest
Having an episode are we???? You failed.
That was NOT his reason for fighting....He was true to his state of Virginia first and last and hence ended up in the Confederacy rather than the Union
Easdy answer NONE...... my family through out its history has never had a single slave
Murderous?
Are you sure you aren’t talking about Sherman?
Stop using those facts!
STOP IT!
