In the worst tragedy in seven years at the annual Muslim pilgrimage, 244 worshippers were trampled to death and hundreds more were hurt beneath a crush of people making their way to a ritualistic stoning of the devil.

Panic ensued when a few pilgrims fell on a bridge, and others tried to escape the push of the oncoming crowd, authorities said. Safety measures were in place at the site -- one where fatal stampedes have been frequent -- but "caution isn't stronger than fate," Saudi Hajj Minister Iyad Madani said.

There must be strong and stubborn resistance to making that annual event; the Hajj, into a safer activity. How could this keep being allowed to happen, year after year after year? My guess is the Mullahs in charge of promoting this event consider a few deaths due to stampede as ‘a fitting and voluntary tribute, a decision each person has made to pave the rocky trails with their blood in honor of Mohamed.

When you read up on the Stoning of the Devil ritual, it sounds like some sort of comic midway game with a traveling circus, You have to throw xx number of pebbles at three walls, except for on a certain day at only one wall, but if you miss, you need extra pebbles that you go get at a specified location, and have to move from west to east (or is it east to west?) when tossing the pebbles and then move from pillar to pillar, after which you shave off or cut some hair.....they specify where on the body and who does the shaving.

But at least they are not Legalistic or anything................
