In an Aug. 4, 1955 photo provided by the CIA, the prototype U-2 spy plane is tested at what became known at Area 51 in Nevada. (AP Photo/CIA)
As far as "best of 2014" lists go, the CIA has a pretty irresistible one: On Dec. 22 it started tweeting links to the 10 most popular articles of the year that it shared on Twitter, and the agency arrived at No. 1 yesterday, tweeting: "Reports of unusual activity in the skies in the '50s? It was us." The accompanying link directs readers to The CIA and the U-2 Program, 1954-1974, a 272-page document from 1998 the CIA tweeted a link to in early July, reported KAKE at the time.
The upshot of the report is that the CIA was the culprit behind more than half of the UFO sightings logged in the 1950s and 1960s.
As VentureBeat reports, the CIA tested its U-2 spy planes at 60,000 feet, an altitude that seemed impossible for man to reach at the timeleading observers, specifically pilots, to suspect it wasn't man up there at all.
VentureBeat highlights a portion of the report that explains that in the mid-1950s, most commercial airliners stuck below 20,000 feet; military aircraft kept it below 40,000 feet.

That could simply mean that they’ve been around longer, not that they’re smarter. After all humans today are no smarter than they were 50,000 years ago. We’ve just acquired more knowledge and technology.

This certainly does not explain the UFO seen hovering in the air by my parents and numerous people on the block in Sacramento where I grew up a month before my older sister was born in 1947. My parent and neighbors talked about it hovering for a good twenty minutes, humming, and then, with an increase in the humming sound, going straight up and the sound and it went out of sight!
Nor does this explain the slightly glowing, disk shaped UFO, about twice the size of a full moon, which I saw along with an entire Up With People cast performing a show in Hughes Stadium on the evening of October 8, 1967, come drifting slowly from the North toward the South, then come to a stop and hover above and behind the crowd of over 8,000 watching the show. It stayed there for about two minutes, not moving, and the shot straight up, dwindling out of sight in abou fifteen seconds. The stupid thing was I was standing there with a CAMERA in my hand and just stared, never thinking to use the camera! I had been taking photos for publicity purposes. . . but I never took a shot of the UFO. The one I saw did not have the domed top. It looked like two symmetrically and gently curved plates put face to face.

What about the other half? Easily explained as Astronomers np mistaking the Moon or Venus for a UFO or the rest as Swamp Gas. . . in the desert or at 5,000 feet, but at least no where near a swamp.

I don't know who "VentureBeat" is but this:
"For years, the CIA secretly flew its famous U-2 spy plane at altitudes of 60,000 feet or more above countries like the Soviet Union. Since no one believed manned flight was possible at such heights, many who spotted the planes believed they were seeing UFOs."
...is just wrong. That altitude had been exceeded many times by that time, by manned aircraft as well as manned balloons. Yes, it was above routine operating altitudes, but not by much, at least for military aircraft during the 1950s. It's still a long way from saying "no one believed manned flight was possible at such heights."
Maybe I am just being too picky. Happy New Year anyways!

Why is it that virtually EVERYBODY thinks that if there are Space Aliens, ETs or some kind of Space Travelers, they would have some superior intelligence relative to us ? I would guess it's because they would have traveled from planets outside our solar system or even our galaxy.

Don’t guess.
Be certain.
All things considered, travel is one thing.
To be fair, our Astronauts didn’t design or build the spacecraft that took them to the moon and back.

If they have the ability to traverse space, than it’s reasonable to assume that they are smarter than us.
Also phrases like, “ Hey hold may beer” is not usually said by somebody who is about to tie all the laws of physics into a tiny equation.

Don’t be so certain.
By chance, or design. A highly advanced spacecraft deserted, or crashed into a city, or captured by the orbit of our Sun, would allow us to explore the stars. But still be idiots.

I remember one of my managers from work a while ago mentioned to me when we were at lunch one time that the two things President Clinton back then wanted to know when he took office was who killed JFK and what was the truth behind Roswell, I assume he never found out the truth, or did he maybe.

Tell me about it, so sad that after the space race and the space shuttle program during the Reagan years to the Bush presidency we have not gotten past our moon yet and worse yet, we have downgraded from the shuttle to a damn soyuz space capsule, pathetic indeed in my opinion.

Can’t have a major space program in what is now a multicultural welfare state....this is a very different nation from what we were when we started the space program in the 1950s.

Agreed...Crop circles or cattle mutilations were not done by the CIA
Yeah, right. This is the latest in a continual series of “the real reason for UFO sightings” that self-described skeptics (a.k.a. true believers) will saddle onto.

I had a UFO experience and the story is as follows. In December of 1996 my husband & I were living in Naperville, in the Columbia Estates area which is located off of Ogden Ave and Columbia St One evening I decided to retire for the evening as it was about 3AM. My husband remained downstairs to listen to music..he had headphones on, and read the Sunday's newspapers. As I walked into the bedroom, the room was pitch dark, and you could only see a faint light from the Moon in the sky filtering through the window shades of both windows, that were located on the outside wall of our two story home. As I got into bed and was about to lay down, I saw a small red circle, with a pulsating center, appear over the right corner of the woodwork that surrounded the window on the right. This was an outside wall that faced our back yard. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and i just kept staring at this pulsating red circle. Suddenly, it was gone from that position and the next thing I noticed was that it was located below the woodwork of the window on the left side. The first thought that came to my mind is that someone was probing my bedroom with a laser beam from above the house. I got up from the bed, went to the window and peered outside, while lifting a corner of the shade. I first looked to the right and saw nothing. And then I looked to the left and saw the following. First of all, the sky was dark except for a full moon and wispy long clouds that stretched from left to right in the sky. I could see street light shining a few blocks down from home, on a very popular and busy street by the name of Ogden Avenue. What I saw in the sky was a saucer shaped craft traveling upward. It was moving very slowly and looping around in a circular pattern as it was attempting to travel further upward into the sky. It did pass over Ogden Ave. and I got a good look at it from the street light on Ogden Avenue. Now I was getting scared as I realized what I was seeing. As it traveled upward, the moonlight became brighter, and I saw that it was a light gray/silver craft shaped liked a saucer and it continued to slowing travel upward. At this point I ran downstairs and shouted for my husband to look through the french doors of our patio and up into the sky on the left, but it was too late and the craft was gone. I told my husband of the laser beam probe through the bedroom wall and what the UFO looked like. He had an experience himself, along with his sister and brother-in-law as they were waiting for a green light. All of a sudden they saw a saucer shaped UFO fly across the sky right in front of them, stop and then zoom straight up into the sky. I called the Dupage County Airport which was located near our home, and they said they had no reports of a UFO in my area at the time I had observed it. But, that's what airports always say when you call in a UFO inquiry. I did have another experience when we moved afterward to Aurora, IL. One evening as I was watching TV, there was a window situated next to where the TV cabinet stood and I could look out the window as I watched TV. There were street lights outside, sufficient to light up the block and aid in my viewing of the night sky. As I watched TV, out of the corner of my right eye I saw a white circular light fly across the sky and stop. It stood in the same position for about 15 minutes. I got on the phone to the Adler Planetarium located on South Lakeshore Dr in Chicago. A very helpful astronomer took my call and told him what I was seeing in the sky and what I thought it was. He said that this was highly unusual, and if the UFO continued to hold the same position in the sky, I should call him back. I continued to watch the UFO in the sky, and then in the blink of an eye, it was gone. I called the astronomer back and told him what happened, and he agreed it was an alien spacecraft that I had seen. So, that's what happened to me..does anyone else have a UFO story to tell?
