Liberals everywhere were outraged this week after Rush Limbaugh said a black man playing James Bond would be “ridiculous.” The comments were made on Tuesday in regard to leaked Sony emails that revealed that CEO Amy Paschal wanted the black actor Idris Elba to play James Bond. Rush, however, wasn’t having any of it. “James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is, was,” the conservative radio show host said. “But now [they are] suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Briton, rather than a white from Scotland.” “That’s not who James Bond is and I know it’s racist to probably point this out,” he added. I LOL’d when I read about some movie which made one of the Norse gods a black man. Loki, IIRC. But as a poster upthread said, wouldn’t the pc cohorts scream if Mandela or some mythological African figure was made white!

Sorry, but Rush is wrong on this one. James Bond is a fictional character. Your examples of white people playing non-fictional black characters is inappropriate and frankly ludicrous.
There is no artistic or cinematic reason James Bond couldn’t be black. To suggest otherwise opens the door to being accused of racism, and rightfully so.

I’ve been a Bond fan since I read Dr. No and Casino Royale and saw the movies in the early 60s. If they pick Idris Elbe or some other suitable black actor I’m ok with that and will certainly see the movie.
Everyone has an opinion, but the box office will respond as the public sees fit. If Roger Moore and George Lazenby can be Bond, Idris can certainly play the part.
I favored Clive Owen when they picked Craig. I still like him to play the role.
Happens all the time when opera companies stage Wagner Ring Cycles. It's supposedly about the voice... but I believe there is bias in castings to be as PC as possible. I was at a production of Die Fliegender Höllander at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in Germany and the crowd actually booed the performance.
