The Obamas talked with People magazine about dealing with their "own racist experiences," as the magazine described.
Michelle Obama told one story that recently took place, even as she was first lady of the United States.
"I tell this story I mean, even as the first lady during that wonderfully publicized trip I took to Target, not highly disguised, the only person who came up to me in the store was a woman who asked me to help her take something off a shelf. Because she didn't see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her. Those kinds of things happen in life. So it isn't anything new," Michelle Obama, who is 5'11", said.
She also said that her husband, Barack Obama, was asked to get coffee when he was wearing a tux. "He was wearing a tuxedo at a black-tie dinner, and somebody asked him to get coffee," she told People.
The president told his own experiences. "There's no black male my age, who's a professional, who hasn't come out of a restaurant and is waiting for their car and somebody didn't hand them their car keys," Obama told the magazine.
NO employee dresses this way at Target, this could not have happened.
Moochelle, I don’t believe an effin’ thing you or your cretin hubby says.
Go away.
Oh, and bring me a coffee.
This was the only REAL moment I actually liked her...
And she views someone asking her for help as racism?
pathological liar just to get face time.
Scary thought the Dems dump Warren and Michelle runs?
Period.
And anyway, what the hell is wrong with helping someone get something from a top shelf.
Elitist liar.
Yeah. Their names were Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy.
Oh, TWO stories of how these poor put upon minorities
were mistaken for someone who works for a living.
Help me take it off the shelf, and get one for yourself.
I know how to get us out the back door.
Obama is a professional? Professional what?
She’s pretty tall, right?
I’ve asked a fellow shopper to help me in such a manner before. He was friendly and good natured about it.
I offered to get something off the bottom shelf for him if he needed it.
Dressed like that, the person probably didn’t even recognize her and only asked her to get something off a shelf because of her height. But it’s always about race isn’t it?
I wore a red shirt and tan shorts to Target one time. People would not believe me when I politely told them I did not work there. Finally, since I was very familiar with the store I would point them in the right direction.
People ask me to help them get things off the shelf all the time. I’m tall.
What an idiot.
(sniff), (sniff). Smells a little like.......bullsh*t.
I’ve had that happen to me, too, Michelle. This probably happens to many people who are wearing khaki pants in one of these stores.
I’m white. Do I still get to shriek about this?
Yeah, I didn’t think so. What a drama queen.
Pretty Royal view she has there. “View’ as the first lady? She needs to look up the role of a President. He;s not a king, she ain’t a queen and her kids are just like any other. They are entitled to no more respect than they earn and being asked for help isn’t racist. Period. Regardless of WHO you are or what color you are.
I don’t get the point of this story. As a middle aged man, I have been asked, often by shorter older ladies, to help them get something off a store shelf. How In the Sam hill is this some sort of political statement? How is this racist? Can someone explain this to me????
Obviously it is heightism. Asking tall people to get something down off a high shelf shows a appalling lack of awareness of the prejudices the tall face everyday.
