You might have figured Ford's new all-aluminum F-150 would be a shoo-in for Motor Trend's 2015 Truck of the Year award, but you'd be wrong. General Motors had its own all-new truck in the running and that vehicle, the mid-sized Chevrolet Colorado, took the prize.
The Colorado is GM's new model that's designed to compete against trucks like the Toyota Tacoma and the Nissan Frontier. Neither Ford (F) nor Chrysler Group (FCAU)'s Ram truck brand offer trucks this size any longer. It is smaller than the full-size Chevrolet Silverado truck.
"Colorado is a smart, capable, and refreshingly honest truck that makes a strong value and efficiency statement," Motor Trend editor-in-chief Ed Loh said in a statement. "It's perfectly sized and suited for the needs of many of today's truck users."

4 cylinder. Sounds underpowered for a truck.
The 2015 Nissan Frontier looks exactly like the 2006 Frontier. I think the Taco is relatively unchanged for 2015 as well. Although I’ve not had time to see one yet. So yes, the Colorado is a new look in mid-size trucks. But only game in town in that dept.
It’s a pity Ford closed the Ranger plant in St. Paul. It dated back to the 1920s but they still turned out well made small trucks.
>>I love my F150...2010 model. 103K miles. Its been great.
My company truck is an F150. Great truck. But I just don’t need to own a truck that size for my personal needs. I’m not saying they should replace the F150 with a small truck. I’m saying they should offer both. Like Chevy, Nissan, and Toyota do.
My pre-nobama GM Corvette has been running without dim headlights for over 6 months and has a “safety recall” for that problem. It has had the recall for 6 months. The “engineers” at GM have been unable in that time to come up with a solution., I was told a month ago by as “supervisor” at GM to “only drive it during the day”. GM sucks beyond suck.
Renault Alliance/Encore had a Motor trend car of the Year decal in the back window right from the factory. They all died within two years.
The I-5 was a total bust IMO. Only known two guys that had ‘em. Both dumped them in anger. One with broken valves and other with engine problems. Don’t recall specifics. Surprised GM didn’t change name when they re-introduced it...
My first truck was a little Datsun pickup...I think it was an 79 or 80 model (could be wrong about that but it was around then)...
A great little truck and it served me well when I was building my house back then.
Article doesn’t say but I assume the GMC Canyon is included in this? Same vehicle basically.
>>4 cylinder. Sounds underpowered for a truck.
When I was 20, I had a 1979 F100 with a 302. It had 140 hp and could pull a boat out of the water on a trailer. We all forget that it wasn’t long ago that the average V8 produced less than 200 hp. My 92 Mustang GT only had 225. Today we think that 200 hp engines should only be on golf carts. (Disclaimer: my 2014 GT has 420 hp and I’m very happy with it, so I’m not some hybrid driving homo.)
I dont even understand a truck that small. 7000 pound towing capacity. What good is that?
Just had to snicker about that a little.... but I commiserate....I remember using my 76 Nova trying to haul crap when building my house in the early 80s....I ended up trading it for a small size Datsun with some big ass mud grips...:o)
However, no one makes them any more. Too many fat Americans won't fit in them, and trucks are now marketed to city people making lifestyle choices, who own little dogs, stop at Starbucks and who wouldn't recognize a sheet of plywood or a bale of hay if one bit them on their oversized butts.
For a U Haul to put all the crap your wife (EX-to-be)tosses all your crap out on the front lawn?
Ditto
Damn little information about the truck in this advertising piece. Information that might be important to truck buyers.
Engine options with torque & horsepower? Transmission options? Towing capacity?
My 16 year old Nissan Frontier is starting to show it’s age and I just may be in the market for a truck next year. Frontier has been a good truck, but towing ain’t one of it’s strong points. I kinda doubt a Colorado will be on the short list. Full size Ford, Toyota or Nissan probably.
In the looks dept., a substantial upgrade from its previous butt ugly looks.
Won’t ever own one though...or any GM product for that matter.
Current ride is a 2005 F150 Supercrew with 108k...it’s been a great truck so far.
Does the Colorado com with secret stash compartments for out of state travel?
Slavish groveling devotion to their pet black President speaks even louder.
For many years the auto press slurred and dismissed anything remotely tied to the U.S. auto business. Toyota, Honda, Suburu et al were king.
Since the auto/union bailout and government involvement in Chevy and Dodge there has been nothing but P.R. promotion of their products, just like the P.R. coverage of little Bammy hissef.
“Maybe the slightly higher ride height in the rear..”
That is a pain in the a$$ when you drive a GM truck. If you have a bedliner they fill up every time it rains, in order to get it to run out you have to find a hill to park on. They are a POS!
