As the high demand for skilled labor continues to dominate conversations about hiring, some jobs that dont require a college degree remain open month after month, with few workers to fill them.
This list, compiled by CareerBuilder with Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. showcases roles for which a college degree is not required and where the number of jobs posted by companies each month far exceeds the number of workers employers are able to hire.
Job creation is gaining ground and job seekers are gaining leverage, said Matt Ferguson, CareerBuilder CEO. For nearly 70 occupations in the U.S, the rate at which workers are being hired isnt keeping up with the frequency and volume of open positions being advertised. By drawing attention to talent deficits, our list underscores opportunities in everything from technology and health care to sales and transportation for job seekers looking to make a change.
To create the list, CareerBuilder worked with EMSI to analyze the average number of workers hired each month in upwards of 700 occupations between January 2013 and August 2014 compared to the number of online job postings for each of these occupations over the same period. The jobs highlighted here may require additional training following high school, but do not require a college degree.
Topping the list are truck drivers, heavy and tractor-trailer. Nearly a quarter of a million postings for these jobs appear online, on average, each month, while 131,902 drivers are hired. Truck drivers bring in median hourly earnings of $18.37, and in 2014 nearly two million workers counted themselves among their ranks.
Next up are merchandise displayers and window trimmersa particularly relevant job as the holidays approach....

So you built a truck that can drive itself ( and load itself, check tire pressure, refill fuel in the reefer unit, chip ice off of the windshield, etc.)? Details please!
How they wrote that with a straight face is beyond me, Truck driver avg of $18.36 an hour, merchandiser, $13 an hour. Now that’s something to aspire to.
I think the real problem is more emotional. People are already scared of the big trucks. The majority of the population would be terrified driving alongside of driverless tractor trailers.
Re the illegal tech workers. Screw obama. So our kids have to study for four years, we pay through the nose, for the college degree in computer science, and then THEY HAVE NO ENTRY LEVEL JOBS??????
What the bleep is he THINKING????
Adult immigrants have all the burger jobs, all the entry level jobs everywhere. What are our young people supposed to do???
Most of the time you can’t even see the driver. And really, what do you want to be next to: a semi driven by somebody who hasn’t gotten enough sleep and just had a fight with his wife, or a robot? And really by the time they work it out for trucks self-driving cars will be in mass production, so we’ll have gotten used to the idea.
I like much of the information on Forbes, but I utterly detest “click-baiting” like this article.
If it’s a list, LIST IT! Don’t make me wait for the same series of lame-@55 ads to load over and over and over again, with each click. With that out of the way:
A few other careers that can NEVER be fully automated:
Plumber, carpenter, electrician, operating engineer, mechanic, chef, bartender/barmaid, appliance technician, HVAC technician, etc.
Granted in some of the above listed a little college can help, but a full degree is unnecessary and is not an absolute prerequisite for a satisfying and productive working life.
Might as well be hamburger flipper.
I finally did that after getting ripped a couple of times for sensors.
Obama is an evil tyrant
the 500,000 new technology worker visas are for technology workers now living in India and China. so these will be new immigrant imports added to the 5 million illegals that will get work permits and ss #’s .this is totally unconstitutional and evil
to throw 5 million new legal workers at Americans who will lose their jobs is pure evil
No kidding, I made a decent living doing HVAC work and refrigeration. No degree needed. Just a year at trade school.
Look up “Robotics” in the dictionary under R.
In my racing experience I’ve found that a skilled driver with peak concentration can perform on par with ABS.
But for everyday driving, it’s something I’m glad to have.
Bartender and cook are already automated and waiting for wage demands to be implemented:

I suspect it won’t be long until the typical fast food site has 2 employees per shift, mostly for logistics and sanitation.
I’ll bet you a nice medium-priced steak dinner that before this guy leaves the White House there’ll be a driverless car pilot project.
also 5 million new work permits for illegals. throwing that many new legal workers into competition with Americans who have no jobs is extremely evil. unemployment will skyrocket for Americans
A State Department program will offer visas with a pathway to citizenship for 500,000 new technology workers
thats a quote from that article
Many companies advertise jobs that they do not actually have. They pile up resumes and interview people they have no intention of hiring just to see who’s out there...
and to call 911 or the tech support, in case the robots break down.
Well like those no longer looking for jobs, that drop off the unemployment rolls...I guess the ‘worker permit’ undocumented workers won’t be allowed to be listed as unemployed....even though they are the reason Americans can’t get those low paying jobs.
Hey buddy, what do you do for a living?
I’m a skilled tradesman at McDonalds.....
