WASHINGTON The immigration measures U.S. President Barack Obama is set to announce this week will strengthen our immigration system and allow families to stay together, Housing Secretary Julian Castro told Efe on Wednesday.
Its common sense for the national economy and for family life, the Mexican-American Democrat from Texas said.
Castro, who on Wednesday delivered a speech at a conference organized by the Center for American Progress, said he did not know how many people could benefit from Obamas executive measures, which have been resoundingly rejected by Republican lawmakers.
Initial leaks about the presidents plan indicate that between 4.5 million and 5 million undocumented migrants would avoid deportation under the plan, according to Fox News and The New York Times.
In an interview with Efe, Castro directed his remarks specifically at those who are hoping for immigration relief from the president.
He said he wanted to tell them that the president understands perfectly the importance of this executive action because the immigration system is broken and because, during the last year-and-a-half, the Republicans in the House of Representatives decided not to support the legislation that Democrats and Republicans had already approved.
During the summer of 2013, the Democratic-majority Senate approved a bipartisan immigration reform bill, but the GOP-controlled House blocked it.
Now, Castro said, Democrats and Republicans have the chance to work together and resolve over the long term the immigration problem with a reform package.
The former San Antonio mayor believes that within both parties there are reasonable people who want the best for the country and who can be worked with, although nothing is necessarily easy in Washington politics.
Castro became a rising political figure within his party after becoming nationally known by giving a speech during the 2012 Democratic Convention and subsequently being dubbed the Hispanic Obama.
His name is being considered as one of the potential vice presidential candidates in 2016, although, at present, he is ruling out that possibility.
The Castro brothers need to be taken out early.
Better to keep them united in their own country ...
Let’s pardon all the mafia who broke the law. Will keep their families united too.
He’s going to be their nominee, count on it.
Unite them in their home countries!
But that's just the favored families.
Families in the U. S. will have so much added financial pressure, that many of them will disintegrate.
Send them back to their home country and let them be together there.
Too bad the families who have a member killed by an illegal will never be reunited.
I’ve been saying that since the last Dem Coven....um Convention
The real anger Obama has is that his father was deported after his student visa ran out and he insisted on knocking up American women. But that was back in the day when Americans scorned people who fathered (and mothered) children out of wedlock.
I approve of keeping families united. Let’s deport every single criminal alien who entered our country illegally. That will help to reunite the criminal aliens with their families in their home countries. Let’s secure the border so that illegal aliens do not enter our country, leaving their families behind. Let’s make the United States a place where illegal aliens have no opportunity for real jobs so that they have no interest in coming here for work. Let’s make the Untied States a place where drug abuse is not tolerated so that even the illegal gang jobs of selling illegal drugs will not attract illegal alien criminals to our country. Let’s keep their families united.
And once the border is secure and employment law is enforced to require citizenship checks, then let’s fix the legal immigration system so that families can come here if they offer more than they will take. Let’s invite the best and brightest from other countries to come here, with the condition that they cannot receive welfare in their first decade (or more) here. Let’s boost legal immigration to meet the needs that our not met by legal citizens and stop giving US jobs to criminals who entered our country illegally.
Except for the American citizen families that rely on employment.
Deportation unites them as well.
Bus leaves in an hour. Momma Rosetta and Uncle Ramos are waiting!!
How is an imperial decree going to “strengthen” our immigration system?
The Border Patrol and ICE are essentially being told, “Ignore the law as written, just shuttle them through.”
It is one thing to say, things are “outta control”, and another altogether to declare, “control is no longer necessary or to be imposed.”
We know impeachment is off the table, trying to shame the Current Regime into toning down their excesses is futile, and the rising sense of lawlessness pervading the land shall only end badly. Syria is going to look like a toddler’s sandbox before this is settled.
I have had it with the Democrats kind of so called common sense
