A woman who was sexually assaulted, struck on the head and set on fire at Fairmount Park suffered burns on 55 percent of her body and remains in critical condition, a Wichita police official said Monday.
Police aren’t sure if it was a random or targeted crime, said police Capt. Troy Livingston.
Later Monday, he said that hospital staff had told him that her condition had improved slightly.
At a briefing for reporters Monday morning, Livingston called it “a disgusting crime,” pleaded for the public’s help in providing information and stressed that any tip could help. He asked people to call investigators at 316-268-4181, 316-268-4191 or to call Crime Stoppers, 316-267-2111.
Police have been able to get only limited information from the woman, he said. A police report on the crime, released Monday morning, said the woman said she had been raped and burned by an unknown black male. That was the only description of the attacker provided in the report, and Livingston gave no information about any possible suspect during the media briefing.

Someone reported seeing a fire and hearing someone yell, the police report said.
“Our hearts go out to the victim. This is a tough deal,” Livingston said.
“Somebody out there knows what happened, and we need that information.”
He said he was limited in explanation he could give about the 36-year-old woman, including how she came to be in the park Friday night. Livingston said the crime, what he termed a sexual assault, aggravated battery and arson, occurred between 10:50 and 11:15 p.m. Friday. The park, in northeast Wichita, is just south of Wichita State University, and a school official has condemned the attack. Investigators are trying to determine whether some of the attack might have occurred outside the park.
Because of the seriousness of the woman’s injuries, Livingston said, homicide detectives are investigating the attack.
Although police have knocked on doors throughout the neighborhood around the park and called in a number of people for interviews, “right now we have very little to go on,” Livingston said.
Wichita police will be holding what they call an “impact meeting” about the crime in the near future, he said. Wichita police also will be working with WSU police and realize there is a concern for student safety, he said.
Someone saw the fire, and firefighters arrived to handle the fire, he said. While putting out the fire, they found the victim and notified police.
Although there have been other attacks fairly close to the park, those crimes were “vastly different,” and there appears to be no connection to Friday’s crime, Livingston said.
Fire investigators are involved in processing the arson case, Livingston said, and he said he didn’t want to speculate on or discuss how the fire was started.
The woman had severe and scattered burns, according to police. She had cuts on her head, and police think the attacker struck her with an object, Livingston said.

I’m all in favor of due process, seeing justice done,etc. But, I do believe that someone who can burutally beat, violate, and set someone on fire, should just be put down like a rabid dog. Protect civilized society by eliminating these vermin.
I bet she didn’t check her privilege.

To add to the horror, I don’t see any way to set someone on fire in a park unless it was premeditated. He must have brought a container of gasoline or alcohol or something along with him, intending to do this.
It’s 50-50 on her being in the “evening entertainment” business.

That is entirely irrelevant. She is a human being, for God’s sake! We should all be praying for her recovery and for the capture of her assailant(s).
Here in NJ most people are aware of the race war and avoid blacks like the plague; as a result they’ve had to go on raids outside the welfare hatcheries for looting and killing. I think the trial is coming up for the ferals that killed the guy at an upscale mall last Christmas season; he was miles from and dangerous area, and should have been safe.
Online shopping offers people a chance to buy things without exposing themselves to the murderous thugs; each year more and more are taking advantage of it. I rarely go to the mall, but over the past few years any time I’ve been there they’ve been filled with the foreigners trafficked here to replace us; very few Americans there.
Looks like one of Obama’s sons got hold of some gasoline and matches.
Friend of mine lived on the west edge of this park. gunfire was a nightly occurance. its just a few blocks south of Wichita State University. Not anyplace you want to be at night if you are light complected and not armed.
