Violence broke out on the streets of Brussels today as more than 100,000 people marched against EU-enforced austerity.
Water cannons and tear gas were used in the centre of the Belgian capital as riot police tried to bring the situation under control.
Fighting broke out soon after the end of a largely peaceful march organised by trade unions and left wing politicians.
For two hours, the demonstrators had peacefully marched down the main thoroughfares of central Brussels to protest government policies that will raise the pension age, contain wages and cut into public services.
But violence broke out at the end of the demonstration as police fired tear gas and water cannon in an effort to clear the streets. No casualties were immediately reported.

Not many nor the right kind.
This will happen here too.
We have a massive A.N.S.W.E.R. affiliated segment of people who dearly hate the U. S. It’s Leftist, trade union, socialist, and just human mutt connected.
People who flirt around with the Democrat party think of Roosevelt. They get all weepy. Good grief has that party gone past that.
I realize he was a socialist, but I don’t believe he hated the U. S. There people undoubtedly do.
I could not be a Democrat. They party has disgusted me since my mid teens.
Think trade unions...
Austerity repulses them, because they think they deserve 7 to 10% raises every single year.
Mix that and government unions, and you’re at loggerheads.
Interesting. Thanks for posting.
> to protest government policies that will raise the pension age, contain wages and cut into public services.
Oh no, people will have to work until 65 to get benefits, and in the meantime will have automatic wage increases restricted, while having to pay for more things themselves.
Aw come on, someone please have a headline that starts out “Brussels Sprouts Violence.......” Anybody, please!
How could Brussels be against the EU. That’s the HQ of the EU. They earn their bread with the crumbs off the EU table.
A true "austerity" plan has to focus and making sure people have a way to earn a living, a better living than they are now. 1. Cut taxes. 2. Cut regulations and open up the economy. 3. Cut spending (not on income stuff at first).
Of course people riot due to "austerity" plans. They're completely wrong-headed.
How does government “cut peoples income” (except public employees and those on the dole)?
The Europeans and socialists are the ones doing it backward.
You left out CUT GOVERNMENT SPENDING, which is always a good thing
It seems that all socialists subscribe to the theory of limitless government borrowing.
Don’t worry, the city will recover.
Brussels will sprout again! :-p
True, that, but the elites want to diminish the portion size. Smaller or fewer crumbs.
On the one hand, the hoi polloi in Belgium are like spoiled children - used to government spending that they really have not been able to afford. On the other hand, the complaint of the protestors has SOME legitimacy as the situation they are protesting is something that would be like Washington D.C. telling Michigan that it had to trim it’s budget, or else. I give the protestors a C for being half right.
That's where my mind went too... ;-)
Ya mean like this one in 2006 where 500,000 marched on Dallas TX?
Millions of illegals were so emboldened by Bush, they marched on dozens of our major cities making demands and threats...All during wartime.
No 100,000 people up in arms against government will make real money flow from where there isn’t any.
Belgium is likely to be the first Western European country to fall to Islam...looks like they’re getting ready now.
It can be (and has been) done as the above illustrates.
Understood. I was mainly talking about today’s civilized world.
There have been instances where large scale violence against large mobs has been used - Iran and Eqypt are a couple of more recent examples. I guess I should have been more succinct in my comment.
Thanks,
