Ed Gillespie continues to close the gap on Mark Warner in the Virginia Senate race, causing Real Clear Politics to move the race from Likely Dem to Leans Dem. Virginia is currently the only Senate race in that category, which suggests its the GOPs best chance to stage a substantial upset on election night.

The same guy! Oh man.
If Warner loses, we will be looking at a national wipe-out. The Dems won’t have a single victory, if it’s THAT bad.
The Gillespie campaign has been largely nonexistent, and Warner is very popular, for some dammed reason. He will get reelected as many times as he wants to run, barring a scandal like him getting caught in bed with a boy or something(that COULD bring out more of his base though).
I can’t help but to wonder how many people sill thinks he’s John Warner. LOL
It sickens me what has been happening in my beloved Virginia. Bozo the Kaine was bad enough, but then the Mac the Rat was elected governor....I’m about one more tax increase from bidding adios and heading to a more conservative climate. I have written letters to the ed. asking this question, if Sen. Warner was such great shakes as a businessman, why did he vote for the ACA without reading it? In other words, why would such a “smart businessman” sign a contract without reading it first?
The trend is the GOP’s friend nationally, lifting most of the bosts. Peaking at the right time.
Hope springs eternal. No way Warner loses here. I anticipate Warner will win by at least 10.
Always should have been listed that way anyway.
Al Franken UGH
I am also disgusted with my fellow Virginians who swallow Warner’s ‘bipartisan’ pap...will do my part on Tuesday to elect Gillespie as well as Bratt.
Just imagine if Gillespie didn’t run from the illegal immigration issue. He might be up 5 points. The GOPe is so dumb.
No surprises here, I bet you think Comstock will lose too, right?
Comstock has avoided major issues. She is following the standard GOPe playbook. We will see how effective that will be. Comstock has had the funding to be successful and she has a well run campaign. A squeaker like Comstock's two races for the House of Delegates, which she won by hundreds of votes, is in the offing. Comstock only received 60% of the votes in a contested GOP primary. Lots of conservative opposition.
When he worked for W Bush Gillespie was on the radio with Rush Limbaugh.
Rush pushed the notion of getting rid of government departments and making government ‘smaller.
Gillespie said “that’s not going to happen”.
Gillespie is part of the GOPe and would not get my vote.
He may win for all I know. Obama voters are as disillusioned as ever and I think they will stay home in record numbers on Tuesday.
Cuccinelli won the 10th district in the last governor’s race.
I’m also in Virginia, and your observation is spot-on: Gillespie’s campaign was dormant for much of the year; he didn’t start TV advertising until after Labor Day. Unfortunately, Warner and various Rat PACs were on the air months ahead of him, defining Gillespie as an Enron lobbyist and political insider.
The closest I’ve seen Gillespie in a public poll is seven points, according to the most recent survey by Christopher Newport University (which tends to skew toward the Dims). There is other polling that shows Gillespie within four, and I think that may be a bit more accurate.
For Dims to win statewide in VA, they have to rack up big pluralities in the D.C. suburbs, the Richmond area and Hampton Roads. Barbara Comstock appears headed for victory to replace her old boss, GOP Congressman Frank Wolf, in suburban D.C. Congressional race; that should help Gillespie. In fact, some have said that all of the Dim Congressional campaigns in northern VA have been lackluster and enthusiasm among their voters is low.
If that proves accurate, Gillespie has a shot. Northern VA really is the Democrat firewall, and if its cracking, Ed might be able to eek out a victory.
My business-owning supposedly conservative father-in-law voted for Warner. I will never understand it.

This is Mark Warner. Pretty sure he is not related to John Warner, aka Mrs. Liz Taylor.
