NEW YORK (AP) — A doctor who became New York City's first Ebola patient was praised for getting treatment immediately upon showing symptoms, and health officials stressed that the nation's most populous city need not fear his wide-ranging travel in the days before his illness began.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged residents not to be alarmed by the doctor's diagnosis Thursday, even as they described him riding the subway, taking a cab and bowling since returning to New York from Guinea a week ago. De Blasio said all city officials followed "clear and strong" protocols in their handling and treatment of him.

"We want to state at the outset that New Yorkers have no reason to be alarmed," de Blasio said. "New Yorkers who have not been exposed are not at all at risk."

The doctor, Craig Spencer, a member of Doctors Without Borders, reported Thursday morning coming down with a 103-degree fever and diarrhea. He was being treated in an isolation ward at Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital, a designated Ebola center.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which will do a further test to confirm the initial results, has dispatched an Ebola response team to New York. President Barack Obama spoke to Cuomo and de Blasio Thursday night and offered the federal government's support. He asked them to stay in close touch with Ron Klain, his "Ebola czar," and public health officials in Washington.

I”ve had the same thoughts. Either their brains are in the process of being fried or they are purposely spreading this disease - possibly as a consequence of their brains being fried. But what’s Nancy Snyderman’s excuse? She broke quarantine without having Ebola.

If the virus gets bad enough by mutation, we may have to surrender NYC to the lizard-men and the apes.

Must we wait ?

(with implicit apologies to the sixteen conservatives in NYC)

Heading off to ebola-ravaged Africa? Have at it. Just don’t come back. Ever.

That’s about as direct as they can be that their ONLY CONCERN now is damage control prior to the election, as that hack doesn’t know a damn thing about medicine.

Just another do-gooder doctor doing NYC this time.

If Congress would just require every person coming back from W. Africa to pass through the White House as they arrive. This would all end in less than a week.

This doctor had the means to have a blood test BEFORE he even left Africa.

I'm not sure how accurate these are before the virus starts to really multiply and the viral load picks up. There's some sad irony here--the doctor volunteers, goes there, treats people for a while, and gets infected in his last couple of days there. Sucks for him, sucks for us.

""New Yorkers who have not been exposed are not at all at risk." "

All new yawkers have been exposed to the idiocy of their leftist leader and hence are at risk for all sorts of consequences.

“Health officials say the chances of the average New Yorker contracting Ebola, which is spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, are slim.”

Ever ride the subways in New York City. Unlike Los Angeles and just about every other city that has tried to become “world class” in the past few decades, people in New York ACTUALLY USE the subway.

Last time I was there, I was standing and made direct contact with a stranger, putting my hand over hers while holding a vertical pole on the subway (by ‘accident’...actually it was by accident, even though she was quite hot...but probably infected with something, being New York). She moved away...but no one has denied that I Ebola can be spread that easily.

I expressed my out-there crazy conspiracy theory on another thread. A few cases like this and it will force the hand of profit-driven pharmaceutical companies to come up with a cure, with help from government resources.

That's just pure speculation, I think worthy of consideration. Why? This guy had to know not to come into the US unless he self-isolated for awhile.

If one person in New York comes down with Ebola..de Blasio will be a dead man.

Meanwhile, there's the News of the Stupid. Mayor Bill de Blasio remains in denial and tells New Yorkers “don't worry, be happy”. I wonder if this genius will still wear the happy face when Ebola hits City Hall?

It was Sunday. My little boy hurt his knee sliding into a plumbing bolt on the basement floor while playing. I called doc in a box and said we were heading their way with a little boy who needed stitches. Bassturd doc got his panties in a wad because I was telling him what to do and refused stitches. I had to locate another better doctor who said it would have been a hell of a healing process without stitches and stitched up my little boy’s knee.

Some doctors are great, I have had some great medical care. Some doctors are retarded and stupid egomaniacs.

Thanks. I suppose it takes time for the test and machine to be manufactured in volume and distributed. And, I wonder how “minute” minute is. In any event early molecular detection is one hell of an improvement over an interview and a non-contact thermometer.
