This is the dumbest chit I've seen yet. Allow queers openly serve in the military, celebrate butt flocking day, and have all sorts of protections against "descrimination", but turn around and outlaw smoking because (unlike AIDS and all the other (literal) chit that queers spread around) smoking is harmful.

Given the choice I'd rather take my chances with the smokers :>}

Homo's back in the day were flown off ship within an hour of their "outing" or placed down in the brig till next port for their protection. I fully support a return to those higher standards.

I guarantee you that there will be more military members maimed/injured/killed by means of alcohol this year than will have similar levels of problems due to smoking.

Why not just let individuals decide? They already know about the dangers of both. It’s hard to ban the one and not the other.

BTW, homosexual behavior will end their life a few years earlier than tobacco use.

Amen to that! The govt runs the military, and has special responsibilities to honor our individual rights. The government also subsidizes tobacco growers. Too much lying, sneaking smelling cr*p here!!!

There is no “individual right” to addiction in the military.

They aren’t smoking addiction, they are smoking cigarettes. They can make that choice!

Good time to repeat the likely false but illustrative story that troops can be punished for damaging government property if they get a sunburn.

One former airman reportedly said that after he awoke from a nap on the beach with a terrible sunburn, a technical sergeant threatened to give him an Article 15 for damaging government property. Let’s not forget that the term “GI” means “Government Issue”.

The story has no merit, but seriously, the military doesn’t need addicts in its ranks and they have ever right to control addiction.

My (late) husband said it happened to him in Africa, although it wasn’t a serious threat, it was mentioned.

“smoking...“kill more soldiers and sailors than wars do,”
The cost to our military is significant.”

Willfull ignorance on display, simply do push an ideology. History is filled with such nonsense and it never ends well.

When can I start getting my Soma rations? I am beginning to think there is something to being blissfully ignorant!

simply to push an ideology

Wanting a strong, robust military isn't an ideology. On the other hand, accepting/encouraging addicts in the military is a reflection of your own addiction.

You don’t care one wit about “having a strong and robust military.” I have seen you deride military members on this board and have reported such abuses. Quite frankly, I am wondering how you continue to be allowed to post on FR.

You are a liar that used a blatantly obvious lie (Tobacco has killed more soldiers than combat)to push your agenda.

Yet, the Class VI still exists on just about every base.

The typical base has internet connectivity.

Food is still sold in grocery stores.

High performance motorcycles are still allowed to be operated.

High performance autos are still allowed to be operated.

Mountain bikes are still allowed.

Motocross bikes are still allowed.

Skateboards are still allowed.

Softball games are still played.

Football games are still played.

Basketball games are still played.

When do we stop the “addictive” behavior that all of these and many more present?

They can all present a readiness issue...health issues, etc.

Why is tobacco the one “evil” that must be destroyed for the nanny staters?

he two yard periods that I went through were bad for my health. Inbound ordnance was bad for my health. Outbound ordnance was bad for my health. Constant noise, fumes and all of the asbestos was bad for my health. Dangerous evolutions were bad for my health. Being the #1 OBA Man onboard ship was bad for my health. Otto fuel was bad for our health. Having to manually lift and carry torpedoes was bad for our health. Downloading ASROCs at night on antiquated equipment was bad for our health. Liberty in Subic Bay was bad for my health. Shipboard life in general is bad for one’s health.

I'd have simply refused to cooperate, and the brass would have promoted me for such innovative leadership.

Too funny to warrant a response.

a blatantly obvious lie

You didn't read the DOD memo, did you?

For DoD, this equates to an estimated 175,000 current Active Duty Service members who will die from smoking

In a 19 year period from 1980-1999, 32k servicemembers died from various causes.

http://www.allcountries.org/uscensus/582_u_s_active_duty_military_deaths.html

Of that, slightly less than 6k died of “illness”. “Illness” is not defined, but I can sure imagine that not ALL are smoking related.

So, using that DoD “memo” for anything other than propaganda is disingenuous.

Liberalism is a mental disease...

seriously - which kills you faster, smoking or an IED?

Given General Order 1, if I were to survive an IED attack, after a prayer to God for watching over me, a smoke would be in order since alcohol isn’t permitted for “cultural sensitivity” reasons.

Until then...leave the Troops alone.

Btw, I’m an ex-smoker (~20years), but I haven’t and won’t go down this path of advocating prohibition.
