he two yard periods that I went through were bad for my health. Inbound ordnance was bad for my health. Outbound ordnance was bad for my health. Constant noise, fumes and all of the asbestos was bad for my health. Dangerous evolutions were bad for my health. Being the #1 OBA Man onboard ship was bad for my health. Otto fuel was bad for our health. Having to manually lift and carry torpedoes was bad for our health. Downloading ASROCs at night on antiquated equipment was bad for our health. Liberty in Subic Bay was bad for my health. Shipboard life in general is bad for one’s health.

I'd have simply refused to cooperate, and the brass would have promoted me for such innovative leadership.

To paraphrase that popular meme, “You do not simply refuse to cooperate.” The brass would have squished me underfoot like a cockroach. You can, however, actually accomplish much by being valuable, sincere and ballsy. I was all of those and used it. My favorite eval stated yours truly, “has a somewhat outspoken manner towards authority”. I was very heavy on the 3rd quality.
It is a dangerous occupation. It is worth the danger, health threats and general BS. I regret none of it. Well, maybe I regret that I never mashed that Polock 1st Class LPO in the face back in 1983. He had it coming.
