20-year study into the effects of long-term cannabis use has demolished the argument that the drug is safe.
Cannabis is highly addictive, causes mental health problems and opens the door to hard drugs, the study found.

It would have only taken 8 years, but the researchers were toking up.
I have had quite a few long-term pot users who told me they were addicted. And due to random drug screens on the job, they would gamble their livelihood, even though they had a wife and kids to support.
Later
Our laws have not been limited by the Constitution for several generations.
“There are things that should be, and then there is reality”
You tell 'em boy! If mexican criminals wanna sell dope to your kids, that's no business but theirs.
I'd expect a substantially higher rate of dependency given the hyperbole that's being attached to it.
You need to look harder. Here are two:
NIH Study on effect of alcohol on adolescent brains
NPR story on study conducted by UC San Diego on brain scans of heavy drinking teens
Turns out any mind altering substance is bad for kids. Go figure.
That said, I personally have several adults in my own family who have had their lives and those of their families ruined by alcohol and others who had their lives cut short by tobacco.
So are you really suggesting that pot is more dangerous than alcohol?
I conclude from your reply that any substance that might cause harm to anyone is a fair candidate for banning & outlawing.
Therefore, the government has the right & obligation to regulate what you may & may not consume. Is that what you favor?
Enjoy your meat, peanuts, wheat products, ... while you can, & don’t complain here when they take it away, or more likely, make it so expensive only rich people - the ruing class - can afford it.
How can you support such obvious tyranny? Haven’t you noticed that as our jail cells fill the drug war is a miserable failure? How many peoples lives could have be turned around if the billions spent on this war were spent helping drug abusers? How many people would not have died but for this violent drug war?
How can you call yourself a conservative while supporting such an assault on individual Americans?
I call you a solid supporter of the tyranny of the nanny state which leads directly to totalitarianism.
“Bottom line is alcohol is FAR more harmful and dangerous in nearly every way, yet we don’t have Fed.gov crashing in doors like some “freedom loving” FReepers seem to advocate”
Oh, but they used to! With Constitutional authority, they did.
There are 2 basic reasons Mexicans sell dope to our children:
1. We have had an open border with Mexico since before Reagan. Smuggling of all kinds - children, terrorists, sex slaves - are flourishing on our southern border.
2. Since drugs are illegal in the USA despite high demand, illicit drug sales are highly profitable. Drug dealers don’t check ID. Notice that Mexicans rarely smuggle alcohol into the US. It’s legal & widely available, so there is no profit in it. Economics 101.
If other peoples rights to privacy & self determination are not important, then neither are yours.
When they kick in your door & drag you away, go quietly please.
I see. So if libertarians could sell dope to our children, the mexicans would go away.
Must have misunderstood your second sentence. It can be read to mean that though it isn’t right, they did it anyway, so that makes it right.
It doesn’t.
What are you babbling about?
Our country and laws have been taken over by the leftists,. They used armed insurrection to do it. It didn’t happen yesterday.
Did Eric Holder go to prison for arming himself with a gun and taking over campus buildings? NO
Even today, look at Ferguson today, the rule of law as was once known here is totally ignored, and those following the law are punished.
The left was not and is not afraid to take up arms against law and order., But conservatives will never do the same to restore our Constitution, despite all the interrnet keyboard commando bluster.
So you don’t believe in prescriptions...you should be able to walk into a pharmacy, request whatever you want....and share it with your friends?
Dude man who cares about any of that? What really matters is a man's inalienable right to smoke nice fat blunts.
You must have missed the part of my post where I said that I am in favor of the legalization and controlled distribution of marijuana among adults. Having said that, however, I am not oblivious to the harm that marijuana use can do to SOME users.
Since the illicit drug market is huge, there is no doubt people of all political persuasions are selling drugs to kids. That’s because it is an unregulated market despite spending billions on the failed drug war. And if the kids can’t get drugs or booze, there is always the bathroom or kitchen cabinet. My neighbor died sniffing Pam - spray grease.
Alcohol is also being sold to kids here in America, doing terrible damage to them. Shall we have a war on alcohol? Oh, we tried that, didn’t work. All we got for our trouble was the Mafia, & a lot of out of work prohibitionists looking for something to do - the drug war.
We see now the fruits of the drug war: Swat team raids on private homes, leaving dead & injured innocent parents, children & pets as a result, not just hunting for drugs, nowadays, the invaders might be from the EPA, FDA, or IRS. The militarization of the local police. The alienation of the local police from the people - see Ferguson, MO. Illicit drugs are more available now than ever before.
If you want your kids to be alcohol & drug free, first, you must be so yourself. Monkey see, monkey do. Then you must somehow mentally & morally inoculate your kids from the constant evil around them. If you are waiting for the drug war to protect your kids, you are delusional.
I understand that some people react badly to certain substances. I agree with you completely on this.
But, this idea that all should submit to prohibitions because of the weaknesses of a few is crazy, & especially so if the government criminalizes the prohibitions. Rather than criminalize all, spend our capital helping the weak become stronger.
No, I do not agree with Federal regulation of prescription drugs. These drugs should be sold to people with a prescription from a doctor. Pharmacists & doctors as a group should dictate what drugs are prescription & which OTC, NOT some bureaucrat in WDC. Do you not see how government interference in our healthcare system has been a bad thing?
People already share their prescription drugs with friends & family for medicinal & recreational purposes. They have been doing it since regulation began. My grandmother gave me one of her prescription pain killers when I was a child in pain. Do I think she should go to jail for doing that? NO, but the police & government do.
