Democrats call for HHS review of gay blood, organ donations

Democrats are demanding the Obama administration update its policy to allow gay men to donate blood, tissue and organs.

On Monday, a group of lawmakers led by Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) sent a letter to Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sylvia Burwell asking her to change current policy to allow men who have had sex with other men to donate blood, organs and tissue.

The lawmakers said the current ban promotes stereotypes that gay men have HIV and discriminates against them.

And while they are at it they might as well call for allowing Thomas Eric Duncan’s family to donate his blood and his organs if he dies. After all, what harm could that do?

I am permanently enjoined from donating because I was stationed in Europe during the 1980s and 1990s.

See here.

And no, I don't have Mad Cow Disease...but since there is that possibility, I can't ever donate.

But yet homosexual men are going to be allowed to do so.

That makes a whole lot of sense, doesn't it?

Way past time to start donations to personalized blood bank.

Why? In the case of a traumatic accident, you will receive the nearest unit of blood available from the public pool in the ER. If you have planned surgery, you or your compatible family members can donate beforehand.

Why don’t we add Ebola blood while we’re at it. I mean, NOT to do so would be RACIST, right?

Probably more like Ebolaphobic.

I say to hell with them, I'm not going out like that.

Any ebo's jumping the border or lying their way in on a plane should be charged with (at the least) attempted murder.

Or correct me if there is a charge more appropriate.

I read it’s projected soon 50% of homosexuals over 50 will have HIV, so it definitely shouldn’t be allowed.

I am a Medical Technologist as well as a frequent (every 8 weeks) blood donor. There are many other medical reasons that blood donors are temporarily or permanently deferred, most of which are to protect the recipient, but some are actually to protect the donor.

As far as HIV goes, it is an established fact that the incidence of AIDS is much higher in the gay community than in the general population so those that engage in that risky behavior should be excluded. Although blood is tested for the presence of the virus, there is a "window" after infection during which the blood test will be negative even though the person is capable of transmitting the infection through blood or blood products.

IV drug use is another high-risk category of donors that are excluded, not just because of HIV, but also Hepatitis B and C. It is typical of the gay and lesbian lobby to complain because they cannot do whatever they want to do just because of "discrimination".

Of course, if they are determined to donate, they can always lie during the donor screening and not admit that they belong to any of the high risk groups.

How about Informed Choice?

You are handed a questionnaire asking you if needed would you agree to get Blood / Tissue / Organs from a Gay Man.

You answer Yes or No.

I’ll bet a whole bunch of Democrat Congress Critters would check the NO box.

Was there a more complete explanation? My husband lost the 1st joint on 2 adjacent fingers in an accident. He hasn’t tried to donate since. Just wondering what the reasoning is. Lost fingers/joints of fingers is a common injury.

Blood has to be processed through the crooked RC, it is a month long process, it is a fragile product, and thus does not have a long shelf life.

Platelets are a better way to go, they keep longer.

But if you have surgery planned you can pre bank your own blood, just do it a month before.

They no longer do donor to patient transfusions, every thing goes through the RC process.

We were faced with this issue when my DIL had to have a fast Mastectomy for stage 3 breast cancer. Sloppy doc wanted to do a radical, she wanted a skin sparing type. He nicked a vein, and had to go back in and repair it, as she was Bleeding OUT, they still wanted to treat it as a same day surgery. I threw a fit and they kept her over night.

24 hrs later I was taking her back to the ER as she was Bleeding out again. She had lost so much blood she needed a transfusion. She did NOT get 1, she is A-, None available. All she got was a 2 day stay in the hospital with IV and pain meds. And a script for iron pills, with no real instructions on usage or side effects. They don’t fill Iron pill scripts. You buy them in the Vitamin isle. Good thing I know about them, I had to buy them. And the WalMart didn’t have the Slo Fe kind which are the better ones.

Iron pills are not a good sub for a blood transfusion.

Its unfair that only gay men (and druggies) get and give HIV/AIDs, just because of how they express their LOVE for each other. That's discrimination. Thats why libs want to spread the HIV around in the blood supplies. Liberalism =fairness.

Marxism likes to spread misery around.

“”””Was there a more complete explanation?”””

All I know is what he told me.

Here is what the Red Cross says about giving blood (Doesn’t say anything about missing limbs):

Tell them, "No. I'll only accept lesbian blood."

Well maybe, if they get it from an intravenous drug user, or from doing the wild thing with a packer.

Of course, the latter would kinda put them in another LGBTW category, wouldn’t it.

My thoughts exactly. Blood donated by gay males goes to Dems only.
