(Reuters) - The death toll from an outbreak of Ebola in West Africa has risen to at least 3,091 out of 6,574 probable, suspected and confirmed cases, the World Health Organisation said on Friday.
Liberia has recorded 1,830 deaths, around three times as many as in either Guinea or Sierra Leone, the two other most affected countries, according to WHO data received up to Sept. 23.

I know a virus much nastier than Ebola that took out more than 3,000 people in just one day in New York City.
And it’s still spreading aggressively.
And it’s 5 6 7 open up the pearly gates.
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why
Whoopee we’re all gonna die.

With Liberia’s chief medical staff under quarantine after one of their office assistances died of Ebola, just how did she contact it? Was it through not taking the proper precautions in PPC clothing or was she as dense as the rest at a funeral? If the chief medical officer’s staff doesn’t have common sense and won’t follow the rules, then there’s no hope for the general public.
Let me guess, HIV? Must have been an improbable day if true, because how could a slow disease kill 3,000 all on the same day?
Correction, probably the original flu outbreak.
seriously? I will give you a hint - the city was New York.

This is a specific instance of a wider question about this outbreak: why are (my estimate) 5-10% of the victims healthcare workers?
They are presumably taking the same precautions they always have, but I don’t recall them being affected to the same extent in prior events.
So has the threat changed, or the behavior (or both)?
Perhaps the scale of the outbreak has stressed the supply of PPE, and they are doing risky things like re-using it (which they are, and which they may not have done in prior outbreaks).
possibly a violent perpetually outraged death cult - that might have been the cause
CIA’s diabolical plot to do away with the African negro seems to be working.
3,091 out of 6,574
That’s a mortality rate of 47%. It’s not exactly the ‘close to 100%’ some folks have been bantering about.
Why are some of these people living and others not? Not caught in time?
If these cases had been treating in the West, I’ll bet the mortality rate would have been closer to 80%, perhaps more.
Actually many of the ‘cases’ are as yet unresolved. For those cases that have progressed to either death or recovery, the CFR is still around 70+% even with supportive care (that doesn’t include experimental drugs like tekmira or zmapp).
Which could be a major factor in it spreading especially when they do their house to house ebola checks and then treat patients who come to the clinics for other illnesses with immune systems already compromised.
Did you see those 3 (?) ebola shows on tv a few days ago that aired on the History Channel 2 and some other network. They might can be seen online. Anyway, the reporter (bozo with no protective wear) wandering around the clinic and going along for a burial. There were garbed medical personnel telling him to not get closer and spraying the ground where he was walking. That entire news crew was insane.
Yeah, guys still sing along with that, what 40+ years later?
Sooner or later, of something, when The Almighty decides it is time...
Thank you for the mention Black Agnes.
You’re very welcome. It’s understandably confusing when they don’t bother to qualify that ‘happy’ percentage with a number representing people who still have the disease and have as yet resolved one way or another.
It appears too ‘optimistic’.
Well, here’s to hoping the happy talk comes closer to the mark. Remember, when the figures were much lower, the rate now was supposed to be closer to 90% mortality.
That hasn’t happened so far. Hopefully it won’t.
We’ll see. The higher rates may yet prevail, as you intimate.
This is a lowball count—its much higher than that. Half the People of Africa may be dead in a year. they are trying to paint a happy face on a dead body. Spanish Flu took 50 million (or more) this plague may double that number—transportation is so much better now than in 1918. Africa is in no shape to handle this—Freedom has not been kind to the Dark Continent—things are much worse than under the Great Powers of Europe.
