Editor's note: It is the general policy of Northeast Ohio Media Group not to show images of people being killed. We chose to publish this video because it addresses questions that have been raised about the behavior of the suspect and the police.
COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine released a surveillance video Wednesday showing John Crawford III being shot to death by police last month in a Dayton-area Walmart.
DeWine's release of the video and 9-1-1 recording coincided with a Greene County grand jury finding that Beavercreek police were justified in shooting the 22-year-old man, whom they believed was armed with a rifle.
In the footage, Crawford is seen talking on a cell phone and waving what turned out to be an air rifle at the end of a store aisle. Police arrived after a 9-1-1 caller reported that a man was waving around a gun and pointing it at people.

What do you mean, what conclusion?
Bah!!!! Wrong person....apologies!!!
Man, I can almost feel this Ronald Ritchie thinking he’s just a Big Shot, reporting some evil man who’s thoughtlessly talking with his hands while talking on a cell phone. Yes, he had an (air)rifle. He died for that horrible crime.
I am totally against the black thug culture, but for God’s sake, the man was dumb, not criminal. How does that moron Ronald Ritchie even sleep at night, after lying like that, getting a man KILLED over his lies????????
He was swinging a “toy” gun around. But the real issue IMO was the 911 caller claimed it was a rifle and he was loading it and pointing it at children.
I don’t get where people think the Police are at fault here. You put yourselves in their shoes; they are going into a store where they are told a guy is loading a rifle and pointing at kids. For all they know it is a crazy guy with a fully loaded assault rife with kids all over the place. You don’t get a second chance if this crazy guy starts spraying bullets down an aisle with kids. I put more of the blame on the 911 caller.
sure hope me or family never cross your path if you are that damn trigger happy to drop a guy who is standing in a corner with nobody around posing no threat that i seen...now if he points said weapon thats different...maybe weapon drawn but not take the dudes life without knowing a damn thing about the situation
Mike
Look at post 57 that I was posting at the same time as your post, I was picking up something about the caller also, without knowing the speculation that you just posted.
He was feeling all like a BIG IMPORTANT man!!!!! In the middle of the action!
The story I just read said the caller recanted about Crawford pointing the gun at anyone. The caller may not have had a good vantage point either. He was following Crawford, warning shoppers to stay away, and trying not to be seen. I agree we need to ask questions.
Of course he didn’t, how could he have made such a stupid comment if he had??
note to self: ohioman must be as stupid as this Ronald Ritchie person. Troll?
Ronald, is that you??
He was mindlessly swinging it around while obviously talking on a cell phone, a white one. Stupid, but not a death penalty offense.
This right here I can agree with...the first sensible comment in this thread and the Grand Jury came to the same conclusion regarding the cops. Arm chair after the fact QB immediate cop haters would have you believe that when placed in this same situation they’d have addressed this in a calm manner. Tragedy yes...guy was asking to be shot? Hell yes...grand jury indictment for the 911 caller? I pray it happens
Which the dead guy WASN'T doing...
Hey - maybe you should watch the video. Or are you another "proudly posting without reading or viewing" FReeper? LOL! :)
a cop killed a guy for texting????
I see two here who would apparently advocate the same thing.
HOWEVER, every police dept in this nation has to be retrained to NOT shoot first....that citizens have rights, and the cops re not judge and jury and electricutioneer.
If I see someone in a store pointing a weapon (if he truly did) at children yes I drop him. Spent 5 years in the Corps..never been trigger happy and never had to draw...I pray to God I never have to....if someone is so stupid to perform such an action they have no respect for the life of others nor value their own.
So this guy is stupidly, but not criminally, talking on a cell phone and talking with his hands, swinging a product sold on another aisle right there in WM and you surmise that he’s looking to sue Walmart.
laughing. wow, just wow. And you think HE is a nut job???!!!
Do you think for one second if that were the case a Grand Jury would not ha e indicted them? Let’s get real for a moment shall we?
I just read more about the woman who collapsed and died as a result:
Nurse. Age 37. Four children. Engaged to be married. She was running from the store with her 9-year-old when she collapsed. Just tragic.
Two people - both gone. Although, maybe the police should’ve assessed the situation better, no matter what the 911 caller claimed.
