While I am optimistic about our Commander-in-Chiefs strategy to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, I voted against the Continuing Appropriations Resolution 2015 that would grant the President the authority to provide funds to train and arm Syrian rebels against the enemy. I opposed the amendment because I strongly believe amassing additional debt to go to war should involve all of America debating the matter. That is why I have called for levying a war tax in addition to bringing back the military draft.
Both the war surcharge and conscription will give everyone in America a real stake in any decision on going to war, and compel the public to think twice before they make a commitment to send their loved ones into harms way.
As a Korean War veteran, I know the plight of war. Our military is the best in the world, but war is unpredictable and chaotic. In the event that the conflict in Iraq and Syria necessitates American troops on the ground, everyone should share the sacrifices instead of the small few who are already carrying that burden.

Pray to God for Rangel’s “early retirement” from this world...
AS far as I’m concerned, we can talk about new taxes when Charlie Rangel pays the ones he already owes.
(Just kidding. I am against new taxes under any circumstances.)
Bringing back the draft while Obama is POTUS would be fun to watch.
All those Pajamaboys going down to the induction center, being told to drop their drawers and turn their heads and cough.
Not to mention the prostate exam performed by Dr Fatfingers.
He can still pay his nominally-illegal taxes, right? No need to wait for ex post facto to kick in.
He was punished. Nancy Pelosi censured him...ooooooooo. Meanwhile Bernard Kerik, one of the most decorated cops in NYPD history went to jail for 4 years for doing the same exact thing Rangel did.
This scumbag needs to ride off to the Dominican Republic, never to return.
As much as I cannot stand this guy, I am not sure I want to incur more debt for war. We are living in the world Eisenhower warned us about.
As for the draft, I am not for it.
I think this venture in Syria is bad. And it will not help.
I thought the war tax from wwI and wwII are still in effect!!??
(not to mention (Vietnam)
That is why I have called for levying a war tax in addition to bringing back the military draft. These are, of course, elements that would foment a national protest, especially among draft age students.
Just like the 60's!
It’s liberals that incur debt for war, especially in the fashion of the past decade. We won WWII in four years and did not drag it out with insane rules of engagement; that war actually helped the US’ economy rather than hurt it, to the point of bringing it to the world’s fore, and in spite of FDR.
And Eisenhower helped create the world he was warning about, so I’m not sure about his credibility.
The War Tax should be amended to lower the payout to EITC and other forms of welfare. Then, even Rangel will shut up about it.
You’d be surprised how much he is still worshipped in Harlem. People see him as a bizarre kind of Santa Claus.
Old Congressmen never die, they just repeat themselves!
A Demoncrat talking about raising taxes and bring back the draft.
O that could be fun watching MSM spin for the low informed.
It’s not about bringing back the draft....it’s about tax. Up to this point we have had a volunteer army.....look after 9/11 how many people rushed to sign up. If SHTF there would be a steady stream of volunteers. THis isn’t about the draft.
You might want to review the list of who has gone into debt to wage war. I think we have had equal opportunity spending on that part.
And Ike was not credible? Really?
How about Truman? He made his bones in the Senate showing waste in military spending.
You might want to loosen that flag wrapped around your head. Bi think it’s cutting off some oxygen.
Oh, that's for sure. I read about it in the local paper almost weekly.
You is attacking a fine olde gent with whom I happens to agree today.
Here's a deal. We go into every Ferguson-like settlement in the USA.
We raises (none too gently)
Now here's the best part: The special LGBT Chasseur Battalions. Led .... personally .... by Charlie Rangel and Hillary C. Other special Battalions: The Gentle Giants; The Good Boys, The Victims Brigade, The Baby Daddies, The SonsaHussein, The Luo Traders .... Glory!
