Education School tells Missouri boy his 9/11 souvenir violates school weapons policy
A souvenir shell casing handed out by veterans at a 9/11 ceremony landed a seven-year-old Missouri boy in hot water when he took the keepsake to school.
Sherry Falke said her son, Zane, forgot he had the souvenir in his pocket when he showed up for class on Tuesday, Fox4KC.com reported. The boy was given the souvenir at a Sept. 11 memorial ceremony in Carrollton, Mo.
"He felt it in his pocket, and he took it out and was showing some of his friends at school," Falke told the station.
"The principal proceeded to reprimand him as though he were bringing live ammunition to school," she said. "I understand that's in the policy, in the handbook, that they can’t bring guns to school. I fully support that, but it's an empty blank casing."
Falke said her son's teacher seized the shell casing and took him to the principal’s office. She claims they Zane he could be suspended from school for 10 days, but instead gave him a silent lunch where he sat by himself and missed two recesses.

Fox4KC: Sherry Falke said her seven-year-old son came home from school Tuesday crying hysterically. She thinks the school went overboard with a punishment her son received at s bringing in a souvenir shell casing.
“He felt it in his pocket, and he took it out and was showing some of his friends at school,” Falke explained. She says her son Zane forgot he left the shell casing in his pocket, a souvenir he received at the 9/11 ceremony from the VFW in Carrollton, given to him and his Cub Scout group.

If the school has a specific policy against bringing ammo to school, then this kid violated it. Go easy on him with the silent lunch, but don’t pretend it’s okay to bring something like this to school.

Not only is that piece of brass no longer live ammunition, it never was (strictly speaking). It was originally a blank cartridge with a crimped mouth - no projectile. See the crimping marks?

Silent lunch? This sounds like institutional child abuse to a seven year old kid. What is this kid going to learn from this? Not too break the rules I guess, but someone with a brain needs to ease off on the PC rules. This leftist PC crap will be this country’s downfall before any of our foreign enemies finish us off. This liberal BS that has invaded our lives and forces everyone in society to do what the Marxists want us to do, is getting so pervasive that it feels like we live in the old Soviet Union sometimes.

If I remember correctly, not every C-ration had a P-38 in them. When I got one, I hung on to it. When the Easterners got one, they didn't know what to do with them, so they'd give 'em to ussin's who knew how to use them. Still have several after all these years.
No...it does NOT violate a policy at all...they INVENT that it does because INVENTING such things amasses power to themselves and they know it. At my VFW Post we hand three polished fired M-1 cases in a small plastic container to the immediate family member of the deceased veteran and explain that they may want to slip it into a fold of the Flag presented to him/her but it is their’s to do.

Placing shell casings inside a U.S. burial flag is a tribute to the deceased veteran, honoring their memory and service. As with all aspects of a military funeral, the Honor Guard must follow the protocol of the ritual exactly.
Rifle Firing
During a military funeral, seven members of the U.S. Honor Guard fire M-1 rifles in three volleys consisting of 21 rounds. This is not a 21-gun salute, which has other symbolic meaning in the military. Instead, the firing of rifles in this way is an honor reserved for military funerals that hearkens back to an old custom when soldiers from both sides of the battle used to take breaks to collect their deceased. They used to signal the enemy that they were finished clearing the dead from the field by firing three volleys.
Placement in Flag
Following this rifle tribute, a bugler plays Taps. A uniformed military person folds the flag, which they had previously draped over the casket, into 13 folds to symbolize the original 13 colonies. While not mandatory, the uniformed military person frequently places three spent shell casings inside the flag while they are folding it. The shells must be placed in the flag while it is being folded, as it cannot be reopened once they complete the folding ceremony. These shell cases symbolize that the deceased received full military honors. The flag is then presented to the flag recipient on behalf of the president and the branch of the military in which the deceased served.

This was an empty and inert fired shell casing. The danger level was on par with a match that was lit and burned out, nothing. Ammo is a complete product that will work as it was made for. A shell casing is only a part that needs several more parts and steps to become ammo.
Rules made up by people who are absolutists and enforced by rote are not rules that people in a free and sober thinking society should promote or respect.

Frankly I am too. Since they could have suspended him for 10 days, but instead gave him a silent lunch where he sat by himself and missed two recesses, I am happy some sane people didn’t flip out to badly. Kid should have known better in this climate.
