Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has appealed to U.S. President Barack Obama for urgent aid in tackling the worst recorded outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus, saying that without it her country would lose the fight against the disease.
The outbreak, which was first discovered in March, has now killed more than 2,400 people mostly in Liberia, neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone, as understaffed and poorly resourced West African healthcare systems have been overrun.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the epidemic is spreading exponentially in Liberia, where more than half of the deaths have been recorded. It has said that thousands are at risk of contagion in the coming weeks.
Medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has set up several treatment centres in the affected countries but has also repeatedly warned it has reached the limits of its capacity and appealed for foreign governments to intervene.
In a letter dated September 9 seen by Reuters, Johnson Sirleaf appealed to Obama to build and operate at least one Ebola treatment unit in the capital Monrovia, saying that U.S. civilian and military teams had experience in dealing with biological hazards.
With the Liberian government due to open a 100-bed treatment centre and MSF scaling up its Ebola facility in Monrovia to 400 beds, Johnson Sirleaf said there was still a shortfall of 1,000 beds in the capital as well as a need for 10 new centres in the rest of the country.
"Without more direct help from your government, we will lose this battle against Ebola," Johnson Sirleaf, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work on women's rights, wrote to Obama.
The U.S. government has committed around $100 million to tackle the outbreak by providing protective equipment for healthcare workers, food, water, medical and hygiene equipment.

Send Obama and Kerry (he was in Vietnam, you know)
Obama’s ancestors may have sent some Liberians’ ancestors to the Carribean and America.
Probably a bad move for chickens to ask for help from Colonel Sanders, but:
he’s African-American, he’s throwing US dollars everywhere so you might as well ask, all he can say is ‘No’ and he only uses that word with (clearing throat) “rich people” and ....
Nothing to fear these is all just hysteria. No danger the FR Ebola experts have the situation well in hand.
Go to the UN and the World Health Organization. Stay away from our military.
In the unlikely event that was a serious comment, scientists have processed the genome of the virus involved in the current outbreak, and it comes from a SINGLE instance of animal to human transmittal. Every living person with ebola contracted it from contact with other people, not from animals. As for how that first person (who lived in Guinea) contracted the disease, nobody knows nor do we even know what the host animal is in West Africa. Elsewhere in Africa, bats (not monkeys) are the primary reservoir.
Huh? When was Kenya ever near Liberia?
Kenya was a center for Arab slave traders on the south east coast of Africa. They raided the southwest coast of Africa, rounding up Africans for export to the Americas.
I’d give you a map but I’m on my Kindle.
The irony again for the Democrats (party of slavery) is that the first ‘Africa-American’ president is more likely to owe reparations for than “rich people” than you or I.
So far, Paul Allen has done more than BamBam.
You are very welcome. I’m tired of all this.
The way this is all headed is toward disaster. Our military is no longer used to defend America but to protect special interests of the New World Order.
I am a combat veteran and one day I will help AWOL soldiers however I can. I never thought I’d say that.
I guess I have become jaded, or hardened in my older age but I don’t really give a darn. Many of us American’s wages are stagnant, getting laid off, are struggling to make ends meet, dealing with sick and poor elderly parents, trying to give the occasional help to our kids/grandkids, dealing with the leeches and sponges that are the illegal immigrants, and I’m tired of hearing about other nations peoples wanting our money and resources. After all this time, they still haven’t “lifted themselves up by the bootstraps” but they know they can fall back on our government to dole out the monies they’ve forced from our hand.
LOL. Kenya isn't in south east Africa and Liberia isn't anywhere near the southwest coast of Africa. You need a better map.
By land they're something like 5000 miles apart. By ocean they're further.
Seattle is significantly closer to Shanghai, China than Mombasa, Kenya is to Monrovia, Liberia.
Dude, seriously!
“Seattle is significantly closer to Shanghai, China than Mombasa, Kenya is to Monrovia, Liberia.”
5714.97 miles from Seattle and Shanghai.
3558.32 miles from Mombasa to Monrovia.

That’s lovely as the crow flies - I’m sure the Ancient Kenyan Air Force would have appreciated it - but the poster was claiming ship-born raids. To calculate distances by sea go to http://www.sea-distances.org/ and you’ll find that in fact Seattle is closer to Shanghai. Of course not to mention that rounding the Cape of Good Hope would have entailed needlessly navigating some of the more treacherous waters on earth.
Why don’t they ask the Chinese? Or Russians? Or EU? To fork out the money. They hate us anyway. Screw ‘em.
Maybe some Boca Haram from Nigeria will join ISIS and carry them a present. Seriously, if I were treating Ebola, I would urge the medical personnel to Google the work of Dr. Fred Klenner. He has used high doses of Vitamin C to treat a number of toxins and illnesses successfully. Years ago I read how he treated rattlesnake bite with 50 grams of C.
More recently I was camping and came upon a situation where a woman had been stung several times in the neck and had forgot her allergy kit. Her body was all puffy, her eyes were swollen shut and she was gasping for breath. I immediately gave her 10 grams of C and several other vitamins I thought might help. In 20 minutes the body swelling had gone down, her eyes were open and she could breathe normally. I stayed with her 8 hours giving her 5 grams of C an hour. The next day she walked out.
The people with Ebola are bleeding to death as their capillaries dissolve and their cells separate. Vitamin C strengthens cell walls and connective tissue. It is also antihistaminic and promotes white cell growth.
Something else I would try would be high doses of Pycnogenol, a very successful member of the C complex family. I have used it with success too.
....he did so under coercive efforts by Team Obama in an attempt to rescue the floundering image of the prompter-reading community organizer.
Geez, obama is already responding by sending OUR troops in to contract the virus to further decimate our defenses.
Oddly, I am reading about all the WHO number crunching but no action.
The Doctors could set up protocols such as taking a unit of blood from every survivor before they walk out the hospital door then set up transfusing the donor plasma to every ebola patient. This could be started now
