As so many in the general public have witnessed, I watched the video involving Ray Rice and his fiance (she is now his wife), Janay Palmer, and the assault which occurred at an Atlantic City, New Jersey casino.
There are two facts which I find disturbing surrounding this case. After viewing the video I read some of the comments in response to the footage.
A number of ppl actually blamed Ms. Palmer for the altercation, or stated that she "had it coming" due to her supposed drunkenness. How they came to the conclusion that Ms. Palmer was drunk is beyond me. Apparently staring at a grainy video for a few seconds is proof enough to determine whether or not an individual is intoxicated despite the fact that the woman isn't stumbling about with a bottle of brew in her hand while singing '99 Bottles of Beer'.
Let us say - for the sake of argument - that Ms. Palmer was drunk. Would that fact justify Ray Rices assault of Ms. Palmer? Mr. Rice spat on the woman at least twice before they entered the elevator. While in the elevator, he spits on her yet again when she finally responds to his behavior. He then cold-cocks her.
The kind of "logic" which leads ppl to believe that, "Hey, she was drunk, so she had it comin'" is the same type of logic which leads this country to further moral depravity.
Secondly, why did it take a video before the Ravens fired Ray Rice? A two game suspension for assault?! I guess money and wins trumps assaulting a woman. The only reason the Ravens decided to fire Ray Rice was because they knew the public backlash would be tremendous.
A players contributions to the team and a winning season should never trump a players criminal behavior. The NFL as well as the Ravens should be ashamed for perpetuation such behavior by players committing crimes against innocent ppl.
This incident is a shining example of one reason I have less interest in a lot of professional sports.
What say you?
Neither of these asshats are worth a spit.
They deserve each other.
Not my Business.
“...arent you glad you didnt have a video following your entire life.”
Pardon me, but that is an asinine comment. I’m not accusing you of being asinine, but the comment is asinine
Has anyone videoed Ray Rice for his entire life? Has ANYONE videoed anyone else during their ENTIRE LIFE? Perhaps you attempted to use hyperbole, but it truly failed in this instance.
I have never cold-cocked a woman, but that’s beside the point.
You stated: “It doesnt speak well for a role model, but there are many sports models that did worse.....The video did him in....”
First of all, the video didn’t “do him in”. He did himself in. Secondly, role models? To heck with role models. We’re talking about a criminal act, but apparently this particular assault is no big deal to you because, “Hey, other “sports models” have done worse”. Using that line of logic, let us release all felons who have not committed murders. After all, their crimes surely are not as bad as those reeeeally bad murderers.
if the NFL banned him, what would be the point of keeping him on he roster?
He has not been charged or convicted of any crime.
So on what grounds are they punishing him?
There are all kinds of violent criminals with convictions playing in the NFL. What makes this creep any worse?
Another Freeper compared her to Nicole Brown Simpson. Women of “high-end” men stick with them for the money and prestige, no matter how many beatings they get. Maybe these women hope their men will change. Trust me — they don't. Mrs. Simpson found that out the hard way.
Although he had not been convicted, the video clearly shows the assault. The Ravens as well as the NFL isn’t required to wait until a judicial decision before taking action against one of its players.
It is a reoccurring theme: “other NFL players have committed crimes as well”. I’m sure that if all of the crimes had been recorded on video, these players would meet the same fate as Rice. It is unfortunate that the NFL as well as the teams owners and coaches care more about wins and money than they do about on and off the field conduct.
Sorry, I guess I am looking at this from a purely legal viewpoint. I don’t know what the rules are in regard to booting a player for some perceived crime. The fact of the matter is that the woman he punched did not file a criminal complaint and no charges were brought. Technically an assault must be an unwanted touching. From her statements she apparently gave this creep permission to punch her so there was technically no assault.
It’s like the aftermath of a bar fight. If nobody presses charges, then it is assumed that everyone was a willing participant and there is no assault.
If she is happy with this guy, then why is it the business of the NFL?
It's battered wife syndrome. It's a vicious cycle that repeats over and over. People like these two always find each other and have long and very tumultuous relationships until the wife can't take anymore. Then she'll go out and find someone else who will treat her in the same abusive ways.
Now that he's gonna be broke soon with no marketable skills I'd say her departure will be sooner rather than later.
Your legal viewpoint does not stand. Charges are not required to be filed by a victim in order for the act to be defined as criminal.
If someone runs over a pedestrian with his/her vehicle, leaves the scene of the incident without any witnesses present, and the victims dies, does this indicate that there was no crime?
Whether or not the fiance filed charges is beside the point. A crime was clearly committed judging by the video. Furthermore, she didn’t actually give him permission to strike her. The video doesn’t show her explicitly giving Ray Rice permission to assault her. Mrs. Rice is just trying to cover for her husband, but that doesn’t mean a crime did not take place.
You said: “Its like the aftermath of a bar fight. If nobody presses charges, then it is assumed that everyone was a willing participant and there is no assault.”
Or someone was too drunk to remember. Or someone was beaten so badly that they couldn’t remember what happened. There are countless examples of victims who were murdered in front of witnesses without anyone coming forward and talking to the police. Does this mean the victim was a willing participant in the murder? Of course not.
A crime is a crime, regardless whether or not someone files charges.
“If she is happy with this guy, then why is it the business of the NFL?”
It’s the business of the NFL because R. Rice was a Ravens players, and the footage of his criminal actions could affect the league as well as the team negatively, thus affecting their bottom line.
Seriously, a video did him in? Not knocking out the mother of his child and future wife, a video?
What does he do at home to her where there is no video or chance of people coming by?
To bad there wasn’t more video around when OJ was beating up Nicole.
Let’s hope he doesn’t get really mad this week when he realizes the Raven’s really aren’t taking him back and take it out on his wife and child.
I find just as disgusting the way he just dragged her out of the elevator. She’s unconscious and he never pauses once, just drags her out, I’m sure scratching up her knees and legs as she was wearing a skirt or dress. He could have easily picked her up but he didn’t even care at that point.
She’s an adult and you can’t make her leave him. But like people have said it’s battered wife syndrome. But somebody needs to look in on their baby. Would you want him around your sister or baby?
They were in NJ right? I don’t know about NJ but any sign of domestic assault in NY will get you arrested whether the other person wants you charged or not. There is ample evidence domestic violence occurred in this case.
Absolutely. In the absence of some form of ready evidence, the legal due process would play out, but in this case, Rice’s punching this woman is there for all to see.
I do wonder if she’ll still “stand by her man” once Rice’s millions dry up.
Women like her make it tough for other battered women. Going on camera and defending him means that some other poor battered woman will have a harder time being taken seriously.
I just found out that she went ahead and married the guy!
Well, so what’s all the dumping on the NFL for now? Why the focus on them? Shouldn’t it be on her now?
In my opinion, the NFL should ask HER if she’d like him out of the league. My money says she wants him playing football!
The Owner of the New England Patriots came out to support him
New England was protected by Roger Goodall when he lost the tapes against New England so the public never saw what they did.
He has two players playing that were arrested for Domestic violence , Ray Mc Donald who was just arrested.
Tom Hardy was convicted two counts of domestic violence now on appeal , no suspicion they say the sworn transcripts were make you blood bowl
Ray Rice was indicted for assault in this case. I believe he entered a “no contest” plea and was given the opportunity to enter a pre-trial intervention program for first-time offenders.
They would have been justified if that was the action they took. Since the NFL and the team went along with a 2 game suspension, that was the final action that could be administratively taken IMO. This will cost them big as there is a contract breech here. It will be resolved in about 4 years but will quietly go away before then.
Thanks. So if the State of New Jersey thought it was no big deal, a misdemeanor, then why does the NFL think it is worthy of banning him. For life? Is there an”assault your fiancé” clause in his contract?
Or is this a political show trial to appease feminists?
Its a late call but no team is required to sign anyone and the league agreement gives the NFL the right to suspend any player. No one needs Ray Rice; every player needs the clear message his ouster sends.
