Multiple banks say they are seeing evidence that Home Depot stores may be the source of a massive new batch of stolen credit and debit cards that went on sale this morning in the cybercrime underground. Home Depot says that it is working with banks and law enforcement agencies to investigate reports of suspicious activity.

What timeframe are we looking at here?
Data from what time to waht time is compromised...?
Update: 1:50 p.m. ET: Several banks contacted by this reporter said they believe this breach may extend back to late April or early May 2014. If that is accurate and if even a majority of Home Depot stores were compromised this breach could be many times larger than Target, which had 40 million credit and debit cards stolen over a three-week period.
Three hours after doing an online HD gift certificate in late June, my bank called me and I had to get a new Master Card debit card.
Anyone that purchases ANYTHING with a debit card deserves to have his/her bank account as empty as his/her brain.
Okay, then we all carry lots of cash.
Tell me what happens next.
And then some guy will come on the forum and tell us, anyone carrying cash deserves to be robbed so they’re pockets are as empty as his/her brain.
I won't go as far as "deserves" but it is indeed quite foolish.
Naked Home Depot users.... wearing just toolbelts.
“Anyone that purchases ANYTHING with a debit card deserves to have his/her bank account as empty as his/her brain. “
That’s retarded and such a Luddite statement to make.
Debit cards carry the same protections as credit cards. I have never had an issue with a debit card in 25 years that wasn’t taken care of immediately by my banks.
>>Okay, then we all carry lots of cash.<<
You carry a credit card.
I keep very little cash on my person.
I worked in Australia for two months a couple of years ago.
Merchants openly tack the credit card fee on to the purchase price, consequently very few people use cards for routine purchases. Elizabeth may be queen, but cash is king. I only used credit cards for hotels and rental cars.
I keep very little cash on me as well. Quite often I don’t have any on me, but that isn’t good either. I try to have $40-100 bucks on me for parking and incidentals. Having someone get your credit card info isn’t good either. I have higher limits on my credit cards than I usually keep in my checking account. I would lose far more if someone got my credit card info and used it.
No thanx.
We’re having a discussion about which cards to use when phones will soon make the cards obsolete. No need for credit or debit, everything will come out of account and if you want to borrow you use overdraft or line of credit.
>>Thats retarded and such a Luddite statement to make.<<
So you think every single financial adviser in the known Universe is retarded and a luddite.
>>Debit cards carry the same protections as credit cards. <<
One cannot drain a bank account with a credit card. I think you are HOPING debit cards and the underlying account has those protections. Some reading for you (this took me all of 5 seconds to find): http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2013/12/before_you_use_that_debit_card.html
>>I have never had an issue with a debit card in 25 years that wasnt taken care of immediately by my banks.<<
Hope and luck as a strategy. Good call.
That would be a pain. Thanks for the mention.
Bails-ins, credit card breeches, government tracking, etc. How many more reasons do people need to switch over to cash?
>>Were having a discussion about which cards to use when phones will soon make the cards obsolete. No need for credit or debit, everything will come out of account and if you want to borrow you use overdraft or line of credit.<<
No we are not. We are discussion debit cards and the idiocy of using them for purchases.
I have a phone app and it is linked to my CREDIT CARD. That will be the model for smart people.
Hmmm ....
After the first two or three days, I would have agreed.
After the first week, I grew to like it.
Your mileage (or kilometerage) may vary ...
You are engaging in a discussion with someone you think is an idiot.
Enjoy.
>>. How many more reasons do people need to switch over to cash?<<
Cash is the least safe thing you can have. ON YOUR PERSON. Keeping a deep reserve of quickly available cash, OTOH, may make good sense for a lot of reasons.
