WASHINGTON -- To be young, male and black in America means not being allowed to make mistakes. Forgetting this, as we've seen so many times, can be fatal.
The case of Michael Brown, who was laid to rest Monday, is anomalous only in that it is so extreme: an unarmed black teenager riddled with bullets by a white police officer in a community plagued by racial tension.
African-Americans make up 67 percent of the population of Ferguson, Mo., but there are just four black officers on the 53-member police force -- which responded to peaceful demonstrations by rolling out military-surplus armored vehicles and firing tear gas. It is easy to understand how Brown and his peers might see the police not as public servants but as troops in an army of occupation.
And yes, Brown made mistakes. He was walking in the middle of the street rather than on the sidewalk, according to witnesses, and he was carrying a box of cigars that he apparently took from a convenience store. Neither is a capital offense.
When Officer Darren Wilson stopped him, did Brown respond with puffed-up attitude? For a young black man, that is a transgression punishable by death.

But - for the life of me - I'm having a hard time coming up with any reason why not.
Attacking a cop tends to be equally fatal, racial considerations aside.
Well, Eugene, I dunno - we let you keep writing columns, don’t we?
Being White in American means being blamed for everything.
Robinson is a moron. He’s not a black moron. Just a moron.
Mistakes like murder, robbery, rape, assault, et...
“Well, Eugene, I dunno - we let you keep writing columns, dont we?”
Heh, well said.
And another liberal bites the dust.
Logic is a harsh mistress.
? Eugene, you make mistakes regularly. In print. Every week. And get PAID.
Must be nice.
It's a lot like Trayvon, the racial grievance industry jumped all over the case purely on initial impressions, and then when it came out that Trayvon initiated the assault on Zimmerman and went for his gun, well, they already had too much invested in the meme, so the truth got tossed aside. To this day, liberals blame Zimmerman, Stand Your Ground which wasn't even invoked, racist cops, concealed carry, everything and everyone except Trayvon, who is the one person who could have prevented the situation by acting like a normal law-abiding person.
Being black in America means being held to no standard whatsoever.
he robbed a store, he assaulted a store worker and then he assaulted a cop.
As for not making mistakes, is he for real. Blacks have more rights than white Christian males today, hell they have all the working for them. affirmative action, racial quotas etc
IF
Strong Arm Robbery = Mistake in the black community
THEN
First Degree Murder = Bigger Mistake
What is all the crime(BLACK ON BLACK) in Chicago considered?
That might have been true before the sixties, but I know of many black athletes who were given numerous chances to succeed after screwing up in one location.
I’m not sure I would call robbing a convenience store a mistake.
I’m not sure I would call assaulting a store clerk a mistake.
I’m not sure I would call physically attacking a police officer and fracturing his skull a mistake.
I’m still waiting for the day when one of these black “poster children” for whatever cause actually turns out to be a halfway decent kid instead of the usual thug or wannabe thug. Unfortunately, every time one of thes things comes up, it’s a Rodney King, a Mumia Abu-Jamal, an O.J., a Gary Lee Graham, a Hurrican Carter, a Tookie Williams, a Trayvon, a Gentle giant, etc. Can’t the black community hold the outrage until they actually come up with someone who isn’t a total asshole?
I’ve made mistakes in my life, too. But I’ve never stolen anything from a convenience store. I never punched a cop in the face. I’ve always avoided walking down the middle of busy streets (if for no other reason than not to get run over - the threat of a cop bothering me about it is sort of an afterthought).
I’ve especially not punched a cop in the face. Although I’m not a black male, I wouldn’t expect good things to come of such an action.
Doesn’t this low-life have some fudge to pack?
