On race, America has far to go. Ferguson won't be the last flash point
The Manchester Guardian ^ | August 16, 2014 | Farai Chideya

The events in Missouri spring from America's deeply embedded segregation and black economic deprivation.

I spent my very early years in New York, living a very multiracial Sesame Street life, a big swinging bellbottom of a childhood. And then our family moved to Baltimore and the iron curtain of the "colour line" fell. I felt that I had moved from the 1970s through a time warp where black and white were the only two colours and never the twain shall socially meet.

I grew to understand what the 50s were actually like in Baltimore, when my mother, for example, was permitted to buy clothes from the major department store but not try them on. (Heaven forfend some black lady should be in the dressing room, right? You know they leave a residue of blackness on the clothes.)

America has never had one racial reality, but a series of them strung together from San Antonio to Pittsburgh to Appalachia. What we are seeing in Ferguson, Missouri, is the result of life in a specific type of heavily racialised zone. Yes, a city such as New York, where a black man was recently choked to death by police officers, has its own very clear forms of racialisation and it's a national issue. But the police killing, last week, of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen in Ferguson has sparked national protests because it represents a specific type of racialisation. This is of the majority black city, big or small, with a white economic and political power structure.

I grew up with mayor William Donald Schaefer, who presided over Baltimore from 1971-1987, an unusually long stretch....

"Good stuff. People actually PLAYED their guitars then."

And knew how to tune them. I hear so much of today's so-called metal, and the guitars aren't even in tune! It seems like all you need is "black wall of death" guitars, double kick drums, Cookie Monster-sounding vocals, and put it all together using Pro Tools so it'll sound just like everything else, and you have a hit on today's rock radio.

There are some talented newer guitarists out there -- John 5 comes to mind -- but my guitar heroes tend to be from the Slash era and older.

"Even those brave souls that read the manual."

Manual? I don't need no steeeeenkin' manual!

Oh yeah...I do. But last I saw it was a couple of years ago. Probably should download a .pdf, but more than likely I still wouldn't read it.

Today’s music reflects a lot of what’s going on in the headds of the kids.

Dark times, dark music.

Some of it is decent. But the “guitarist” aspect of it is missing. Where are the new Carlos Santanas, Uncle Teddys, Blackmores, Gary Moores (RIP, Gary), Rory Gallagher (RIP), Stevie Ray Vaughns (RIP)?

Nothing on the horizon that I’ve heard. And that’s a shame.

If you pick up an instrument, LOVE it and be the best you can be at it.

Same as anything else you set your hand to.

This is an opportune time for someone, or a lot of someones, to step forward and really shake the music world down to its foundation. Things have been stale for so long, with the same ol' gangster rap, bubblegum pop, death metal, and boring-a** "Americana" (folk) garbage, that someone with a fresh sound could really blow the doors off.

Not everyone is a fan of Guns n' Roses -- I am -- but there's no denying that in '87, when rock n' roll had gotten old and stale, those guys came along and shook things up. Unfortunately, just a few years later, Nirvana came in like a tornado and everyone forgot how to play songs with more than three chords and lyrics that weren't mumbled. Since then, a few decent bands have come out, like Brother Cane, Velvet Revolver, and Caroline's Spine, but for the most part, rock n' roll has been in a death spiral. Time for someone to step up and shake the Earth again.

I agree...RIP Gary Moore. That man could shred until his fingers were glowing, then slow it down and play blues with so much soul, I'd be close to tears. We lost a good one there.

I suppose we could consider it his 'going away' consolation prize.

Some prize, huh? A lie that he never could back up.
