A Cop Is Killed Every 58 Hours
National Review ^ | 08/15/2014 | Michelle Malkin

Posted on 08/15/2014 5:05:16 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

If you’ve been watching cable news, reading Hollywood celebrities’ tweets, and listening to race-hustling opportunists, you might think that every police officer in America has a finger on the trigger, hunting for any excuse to gun down defenseless youths.

This hysterical nonsense must be stopped.

The Cirque du Cop-Bashing, with Al Sharpton as ringmaster, is working overtime to exploit the deadly incident in Ferguson, Mo. That means stoking anti–law enforcement fires at all costs.

Are there bad cops? Yes. Does the police state go overboard sometimes? Yes. Do the demagogues decrying systemic racism and braying about “assassinations” know what happened when teenager Mike Brown was tragically shot and killed last week? No.

Here’s a reality check. While narcissistic liberal journalists and college kids are all posting “hands up” selfies in hipster solidarity with Ferguson protesters, it’s law-enforcement officers who risk their lives in “war zones” every day across the country.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) reports that a total of 1,501 law-enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the past ten years, an average of one death every 58 hours, or 150 per year. These include local and state police officers, federal officers, correctional officers, and military law-enforcement officers.

Fact: Last year, 100 law-enforcement officers were killed. On average, over the past decade, there have been 58,261 assaults against law enforcement each year, resulting in 15,658 injuries.

Fact: New York City has lost more officers in the line of duty than any other department, with 697 deaths. Texas has lost 1,675 officers, more than any other state.

Just this week, NLEOMF released preliminary fatality statistics from August 2013 to August 2014. Total fatalities are up 14 percent, from 63 last year to 72 this year.

and even the couple on here keep trying to publish left wing B/S about cops
Couple? The number of cop-haters on FR is both astounding and embarrassing.
Some have even started calling LEOs by the 1960s scumbags' favorite - "pigs."
Jim Robinson should be ashamed.

The good cops should be fighting to stop the whitewash because that makes them all look bad when they allow the corruption to continue.

you will see no disagreement from me on your thought above.

There used to be rule out West.
You can’t out run Motorola.

I have seen to many accidents where a cop injures an innocent person trying to catch a non dangerous suspect (speeding for example).

Much of my family are cops. I grew up with them. Something has changed.

Let me guess. The leading cause of cop deaths is dog bites?

“Police in Ferguson committed another serious error, according to Masterson. “Officers,” Masterson explains, “must avoid donning their hard gear as a first step” (Hard gear is the police term for riot gear such as helmets and body armor). “

What’s your solution, disolve the police? Who you gonna call when your neighbor gets drunk and keeps you up all night or you have a heart attack?

The proper solution would be for the bad to be weeded out. But they don't do that. And yes, police departments have been dissolved in New Mexico and other areas for corruption.

Granted Albuquerque and Rio Rancho are the the first and third largest cities in New Mexico, and it wouldn't likely work. Albuquerque has had a multitude of problems with cops killing people lately, but they've also got a lot of problems to deal with with respect to some very nasty criminal elements.

I don't hate the cops, I just despise the fact they get away with doing things (speeding, traffic violations, running code to run a red light, beat-downs, killing people) that you or I would be cited or imprisoned for. I also think less of the good ones who sit by and let it happen without doing anything.

Hope you filed a report ... I would have and have done so in the past.

Funny enough, the guy had a bumper sticker to call 3-1-1 and report driving. So, I did. The car was unmarked, so I didn't see the "cop lights" until I caught up with it at a light. A couple of weeks later, I get a message from a "duty sergeant" to call and talk. I never called back. Something about the tone of the message just didn't sit right with me, so I never called back. I should have, and have kicked myself since.

Some would call it a crime but I too remember a different time when young. Firearms were everywhere I went and I knew not to touch till an adult gave me permission. Times have changed and everyone is more on edge these days, regrettably. I confess ... sometimes I too am on edge these days. Sign of the Times, I suppose. Though I’ve never been a LEO, have been accused several times of being LE. Guess was because of family and I came to love those serving behind the badge. When accused of being LE I’d simply laugh and get the heck out of dodge if was out looking around but that’s legal to be looking around ... but today looking around, by many people, appears to be illegal in many people’s minds. Dangerous times with and without a badge and (imho) is more so in the present day. There are four generations in my family of those working either as or with LE. Am proud of that heritage.

A friend of mine told me that Law Enforcement is the ONLY THING that right now stands in the way of Martial Law and a complete Dictatorship, camps and all.

Maybe it’s true....I don’t know. I think our Military has been purged of it’s Constitutional Oath Keepers at this point.

Our Military might fool us all and maybe, just maybe, they and LE will be right there with the People that love Peace. One will probably find out soon enough if one lives long enough. That will be a time of a blessing or a curse and as always the bad guys will consider standing for Peace a curse.

104 mph on Maitland Blvd? I drove that road over at least 1,000 times during the years I lived in FL. Insane to go that fast on any part of it. Even in the 60s, but in 2009?

I don’t think those numbers are sorted to filter “friendly fire” - one of the biggest killers of cops.

The shift seemed to happen around 20 years ago. My late uncle was a Nebraska State Patrolman, and later a cop in Omaha. I knew most of those guys on his shift, and while there were some a holes, they were very good guys.

When the next generation of cops started (my cousins and others I grew up with), they changed focus. For starters, many have told me they would just follow orders, no matter what those orders would be. My uncle did not and would not do that. The other shift was the guys I knew all of my life began to seem themselves as above the ordinary people, or as equivalent to soldiers in Iraq (as in fighting a war). Never mind the Army and Marine cousins and friends of mine do not like that attitude. (In general, the regular guys HATED reserve forces made of from police officers. They got to many people killed).

My uncle viewed his job as serving the public. My cousins view it as controlling the public (their words, not mine). My uncle was a hard a$$, but he always treated people with respect. My cousins have been known to pull their side arms over traffic violations (and they are not alone in that).

When police start acting like occupation forces, and start seeing themselves as such, don’t be surprised with the regular people start treating them as such. I used to be VERY pro cop. I would give them the benefit of the doubt in general. Now, because of those I know, I am no longer that way. Times have changed, and not in a good way.
