The difference between depression and normal sadness

“Depression is one of the most tragically misunderstood words in the English language,” writes Stephen Ilardi, an associate professor of clinical psychology at the University of Kansas, in a blog post on the Psychology Today website. “When people refer to depression in everyday conversation, they usually have something far less serious in mind,” than what the disorder actually entails. “In fact, the term typically serves as a synonym for mere sadness.”
Here are some facts about depression:
Although major depression can strike people of any age, the median age at onset is 32.5, according to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
Depression is more common in women than in men, according to Washington University.
Men with depression are more likely than depressed women to abuse alcohol and other substances... Depressed men may also try to mask their sadness by turning to other outlets, such as watching TV, playing sports and working excessively, or engaging in risky behaviors....
Men’s symptoms of depression may be harder for other people to recognize, and the illness is missed more frequently in men, Goldstein said.
Men with depression are more likely than women with the condition to commit suicide, Goldstein said. Men with depression may go longer without being diagnosed or treated, and so men may develop a more devastating mental health problem.
Robin Williams could make you laugh until your sides hurt, and your beer is exploding out your nose! Robin's acting chops for serious roles showed he was not just another funny face, but his way of slipping his very liberal politics into his stand up humor always stuck in my craw.
I make fun of a lot of folks I agree politically with but I never make fun of their beliefs because those are mine also. That is a line I will not cross. Robin Williams crossed the line too many times to count, especially on George W. Bush and Sarah Palin.
Now, he takes his own life. I know depression. I lived it for a long time and know how it can be a struggle just to get out of bed. That said, while I have empathy for his plight, I do not have any sympathy at all for his solution.
And to top it off, the media will wring this out until they hope there is not a dry eye in the house. His death pushes all the other news off the page.
God help us when Whoopi goes--
Then suspect the White House...
From a Robin Williams thread which was pulled. Putting my comment here just because:
“What Dreams May Come.”
Thanks, not that I ever want to see that movie again.
Imagine the horror of those who found him, so sad. They need prayers and consolation.
My husband had a college friend in his engineering class who killed himself a year after graduation. Very smart promising good looking kid. HIs funeral was a brutal experience. I have been to various funerals including my own mother’s but the darkness and despair that surrounds the death of someone who has killed themselves is truly terrible.
My belief is that there is a supernatural temptation for humans to kill themselves when they feel alone and most vulnerable. It is sad and tragic that Robin was unable to conquer the demons that chased him and ultimately won.
Prayers for his family as they face the horror of his death. May they find the peace and strength that only God can provide.
You’re very welcome .... that was my tagline for many months....happened to be the last words my dad said before we left the hospital for the night. He died that night. Alone in his sleep.
If I could take back time...we would have spent the night...I’ll carry that remorse until I can be with him again, God willing.
In the scheme of things.....he was a far greater man on Earth, than the recently elegied. Yes, I am biased, and was blessed. ;D
whether we here in this life forgive or not means little.
Rest in peace, Robin McLaurin Williams.
“Whitman sniper on the Texas U tower?”
He was prescribed many drugs including Dexedrine and Valium and perhaps others.
He also had a brain tumor that acts in a way to modify Meir chemical homeostasis.
So I’d say he fits the pattern well for being on drugs or having a condition that changes serotonin and dopamine homeostasis.
Hey Bender it was suicide by hanging

“...I picked up something along the way from it. Compassion and some understanding. ..”
Thanks for that, CVA66 and Vermont Lt, for your comments also.
Clearly, there are those amongst us here who have none, yet are the first to tell us what good Christians they are, and how crappy everyone else it.
Even when an Admin Mod tells the GTFO the thread...
I saw him on TV several years ago commit a horrible blasphemy.
I think it was indeed on one of the major award presentation shows, but maybe not.
never liked him at all and that sealed it.
a plain nutbag (that’s being generous).
a horrible man.
So sorry to hear that about your Dad.
Lost my old man when I was a kid. He was 55 feet tall to me. Lost my Mom a few years ago. It’s not easy.
“...Ill carry that remorse ...”
Please forgive my imposition here, but I’ll say that that’s probably not what he would have wanted for you. I’ll go out on a limb and say that he’d thank you for being his wonderful child, his pride and joy, and for all the happiness you gave him over the course of his life with you.
And he’d say also that, BECAUSE he loved you so much, he’d probably tell you not to have remorese, but to go and live your life, find that place and the memories that make you happy, and cling to them. And be glad for and appreciate the life that God gave you, the fact that you had the time you did have together, and the chances you have every day, to make your corner of the world a better place.
I’ll bet that’s what your Papa would tell you. Because that’s what fathers who love their kids do.
We carry the memories of our loved ones in our hearts and minds... so they’re never gone forever.
But yeah, it still hurts. I get that...
A preposterous claim to suggest know one has a depressed individual in their family. Everyone gets depressed; it is called being a living human. Williams was a coward who shifted his pain to his family as the easy way out—this was a childish and self-centered act with not a care for those he left behind. What do you know about Robin’s drug abuse—nothing but what is reported by the media.
Thanks; didn’t know all that.
Robin Williams may not have shared your politics, but he also did multiple tours in the Middle East supporting our soldiers. So who was it he hated? The Freeper was being a jerk.””
He did, I give him and his PR director credit for promoting his positive image. I just hope he meant it. Most of holywood has nothing but disdain for those in the military.
He’s not just a liberal, he was also a major financier of the criminal enterprise which steals and murders casually, the Democrat Party. As far as freedom loving people are concerned, America’s liberals are not dying quickly enough. The liberal media advertises his death because they want children to emulate him in committing suicide.
He does have a stopped clock moment, to be fair.
