Does anyone here breed dogs? I love a certain breed of dog and next year I am going to end one of my jobs and would like to buy and raise and train a few dogs of my favorite breed.

But I don't know how to start. Love information. Or even direction.

FreeRepublic you are like a husband, advisor, computer geek and everyday company to me. Love you all and wish I could have you all over for Chickensoup!!

I don’t want to breed any but would love to see the temperament of my Jack Russell bred into more.

I may as well say it before someone else does. I use to date a dog.

Find and talk to reputable breeders of the breed you’re looking at. If you’re looking to show, talk to handlers who do the show circuit.

Buy a girl dog and a boy dog and put them in the backyard together. Wait to see what happens. :-)

Love Information: First you get a good boy dog. Then you get a good girl dog. Then you introduce them. Pretty soon you have a lot of good dogs.

I wouldn't quit my other job first.

Raising dogs tend to poop you out. It's a litter different then you think.

Oh come now, you can’t post a thread like this and not tell us the breed.

Go to AKC and other dog websites an do some reading. You can pick up a bunch of hints and save time and money. There are many that gone through this before.

If you are just looking to raise and train for your own personal pet...it's very easy.

But if your goal is to supplement your income...the breeders I know consider it a very low (if any) profit venture. Most of them are interested in “keeping the breed pure”, etc.

From what I can tell, hunting dogs can be profitable. Their litters are large and a good one is expensive. I once looked into breeding Pappillons. Two pups a year at best. I gave up on the idea due to economics and the fact I would get attached to every pup and not be able to give it up.

Contact some reputable breeders in your area and visit them. Learn all that you can about the breed in which you have an interest. Go to dog shows and talk to the owners of various breeds that seem appealing to you. Keep an open mind. Breeding dogs is more complicated than you may have imagined.

Good luck!

It is MUCH more complicated than u might think.
Some breeds have been so destroyed they are beyond help.

If its been in a movie or military, its messed up.

Hip desplasia and sudden strike syndrome is everywhere in many breeds.

Talk to the best breeders u can find. Don’t add to the problem by going cheap.

You should breed a bulldog with a shih-tzu.

First flush all your money down the toilet.

Next decide if you want a puppy mill operation or a quality one. If the former please rethink it.

Next, call the vet and tell them to buy a nice expensive car and not to worry about the payments.

Cross a French Poodle with an Alaskan Timber Wolf and you get Fifi of the North.

My former neighbors got into the world of raising/breeding/training dogs. Started with their getting their first dog(s). He had never had a dog in his life! They did the dog show circuit and found they loved that life.

But I think you do have to spend a year or two shmoozing those who are in the field, join the kennel clubs in your area, and nationally for your particular breed.

(Check your zoning restrictions, if any, before you invest too much time/effort/$$. They’re not my ‘former’ neighbors for nothin’)

Most importantly, health test foundation stock for genetic issues and screen buyers with a psychotic zeal.
