Brooklyn, Iowa The battle for control of the U.S. Senate could come down to a dispute between two neighbors in this heartland hamlet over four plump, wander-prone hens.
This spring, Pauline Hamptons chickens roamed onto Bruce and Carolyn Braleys vacation property on tranquil Holiday Lake. Hampton said she did not know this until she walked over one day to offer Carolyn a dozen fresh eggs. To which she said her neighbor replied, We arent going to accept your eggs and we have filed a formal complaint against you.
Carolyn took her complaint to their neighborhood homeowners association board meeting in May. Her husband, Bruce, then called the associations lawyer, Thomas Lacina, to say that he believed chickens are not pets and should not be permitted at Holiday Lake, and that he wanted to avoid a litigious situation, according to an e-mail Lacina wrote. Braley denied that he threatened a lawsuit.
Regardless, Hampton relented and built a wire fence in her back yard to contain the chickens. No harm, no fowl in the Braleys yard, at least.

Bruce Braley (D)
OK...so why would wapo publish this?
I'd say his character has fueled the nasty character assault against him....
I was recently in Des Moines and saw some of Braley’s TV ads. The ads tried to tie Joni Earnst with the Koch brothers and Sarah Palin. I thought these ads were pathetic and showed desperation by evoking liberal boogie men.
Free range chickens need to range free! Braley sounds like an a$$.
I know, right? It's like the Times publishing the article that torpedoed the Dem Senator in Montana. Is it possible that they're actually ashamed of their behavior in the past several years and are becoming journalists?
That would be "No fowl no harm," which would have been funnier, but fewer would get it.
Braley’s chickens are coming home to roost!..................
Count me among the people who dont want Bruce Braley to be the next senator from Iowa. He knows little about the care and feeding of animals, how can he possible bring pork back to Iowa?
While chickens should be out on dirt to chase bugs for dietary supplement, they ought not be allowed to roam freely on less than several acres of secluded land - certainly not in a subdivision with a homeowner’s association.
He certainly came off that way in that talk he gave to the trial lawyers.
“We don’t want no eggs from CHICKENS! We get ours at the store!”
The Post goes out of its way to obscure and delay telling the reader that Braley is a Democrat.
Ah, but according to the article these were not mere chickens. They were therapy hens.
While I think Iowa is a state vastly overrated in its political importance, it is still more important than Washington, DC and the chattering political class is jealous.
By running a negative story on a rural state Democrat now and then, the WaPo can pretend they are actually journalists.
Of course, that's SOP. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that the Times mentioned Walsh being a Democrat in the headline of the article where they reported on his plagiarism. That makes no sense.
If Iowegians elect this jerk, they’ll get exactly what they paid for.
I imagine the media outlets are tired of repeating “Why couldn’t this be a Republican?”. There is so much news they can’t cover and it is hurting profits.
“Braleys chickens are coming home to roost!..................”
The problem was they were wandering and ‘roost’ing on others properties !!
I have hens and then will sh!t everywhere, you step in it and track it in the house without knowing. I just fence them in and problem solved.
