More Colorado drivers in fatal crashes positive for pot, study says
Denver Post ^ | 5/15/2014 | John Ingold

Two new University of Colorado studies paint an ominous picture of the direction of the state since marijuana commercialization, but neither provides conclusive evidence that legal pot is causing harm.

One study shows more drivers involved in fatal car accidents in Colorado are testing positive for marijuana — and that Colorado has a higher percentage of such drivers testing positive for pot than other states even when controlled for several variables. But the data the researchers use does not reveal whether those drivers were impaired at the time of the crash or whether they were at fault.

"The primary result of this study may simply reflect a general increase in marijuana use during this ... time period in Colorado," the study's authors write.

The other study shows that perceptions of marijuana's risk have decreased across all age groups with the boom in marijuana businesses in the state. The study also finds that near-daily marijuana use among adults increased significantly starting in 2009, relative to states without medical marijuana laws. But the study's authors acknowledge that they cannot show Colorado's marijuana laws are the reason for the shifts in attitudes and use.

How many people have to die in order for losers to have the right to get high?

More evidence Reagan was right and libertarian knuckleheads are wrong.

We either live in a free society or we live in a police state. You choose the police state. I choose a free society. BTW, I don’t do drugs and do not advocate anyone else to do them either.

I’m so glad that marijuana legalization has been happening at a state level and not at a national level so that we can see how that state pans out before a big decision happens for the whole nation.

Unfortunately, it is just going to take time for people to see the long term results of marijuana. Eventually, it will be the new tobacco and it will be banned everywhere.

___________________________________________________

Well, 10,000 people die each year on our highways because losers have the right to get drunk.

Freedom means people will die because getting high and drunk are rights.

“Testing positive for pot” can merely mean that someone smoked pot within the last couple of months. THC is fat soluble and stays in the system long after any psychoacte effect has worn off. It doesn’t necessarily mean they were under the influence or that pot caused the accident in any way.

Having traveled to Colorado many times, I can say it has more than it’s share of challenging roads. It would be interesting to look with greater detail into topographical variances.

I don't see in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution where the federal government was given any power over drugs at all.

This is, and should be, a police power of the States.

Assuming you care about the Constitution and limiting the federal government to what they are allowed to do under the supreme law of the land.

A large segment of the public is not well connected with the black market for banned drugs. Or perhaps they were connected when in school or college but are no longer so after years in the workplace. One of these drugs becomes legal. The urge exists among the not well connected to try the formerly illegal substance. Assuming a market exists for a produce, ease of availability increases usage, whether it is marijuana or anything else.

over time pot/marijuana use does destroy the ability of the brain to function. The simple solution is to prohibit pot users from hold driver’s licenses in the same way those who are treated for epileptic seizures are prohibited.

It doesn't "destroy" the brain's ability to fucntion. Yes, there have been some long term congitive effects for very heavy users but not as bad as the long terms effects of heavy alcohol abusers so any such restrictions would also have to apply to those who drink alcohol.

Talked to a nurse that said that she had a patient that had eaten 7 pieces of drug laden treats before getting high then went int schizophrenic reactions. Another emergency room nurse said he had a patient that had overdosed and was going in and out of consciousness for 17 hours thinking they were dead.

That fact is lost on 90% of Freepers. Of course more people smoke since it’s legal, but it doesn’t mean they were high when they were driving.

Just let the pot heads keep on smokin’ weed and crashing over cliffs. This will thin out the herd of pot head.

Three.

As a libertarian knucklehead, I could not be happier. I want everyone to get stoned. I want to be wasted all day, all the time. I want to drive fast in the snow. I want it sold in grade schools. I like pickled okra.

I am every bit the cartoon monster your simple mind can best imagine. What a nimrod.

I’m not a doper or a libertarian, but it’s a little early too early to make any hard and fast conclusions. In five years we’ll have a better idea of the effects of legalization.
