A new warship to be named the USS Detroit will be commissioned in a 2016 ceremony along the Detroit River. The 389-foot long, 7.5-million-pound littoral combat ship, shown here in a June 27 photo, is being built in Marinette, Wis. It will sail after the Detroit ceremony to its home port in San Diego. Agree. Names should be inspiring, not depressing.

Whoda thunk a USN ship would be built and commissioned on the Great Lakes.
Actually there was another USS Detroit - a 4-stack light cruiser. One of only TWO warships that were at Pearl on Dec 7 AND at Tokyo Bay for the Surrender ceremony.

There’s at least one aircraft carrier trainer at the bottom of lake Michigan.

USS Detroit (CL-8) was an Omaha-class light cruiser of the United States Navy. She was the fourth Navy ship named for the city of Detroit, Michigan.
Detroit was launched on 29 June 1922 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Quincy, Massachusetts; sponsored by Miss M. Couzens, daughter of James J. Couzens, the Mayor of Detroit, Michigan; and commissioned on 31 July 1923, Captain J. Halligan, Jr., in command.

Sounds like a cruiser name, and it’s smaller than the destroyer where I was assigned.

I’m so sure I would like to be on a ship named after a bankrupt, dying city.

A number of fleet submarines, about 2 dozen IIRC, were built in Manitowoc, Wisconsin during WW-II and floated down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico
Not to mention landing craft were also made in Wisconsin and in Kansas City as well. They to were floated down the rivers to the gulf as well.

Not that I know of, too small to be a target.
I know it burned at least one of it’s engines up getting out. Headed back to California IIRC.
