Florida sheriff defends acquisition of surplus MRAP Published June 30, 2014 Associated Press
DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. – A decision by one Panhandle sheriff's office to purchase a military surplus MRAP is being criticized by some residents.
The Northwest Florida Daily News reports that the Walton County Sheriff's office bought the mine-resistant and ambush-resistant MRAP for just the $2,500 cost of delivery.
Sheriff Mike Adkinson says the heavy-duty vehicle will protect his officers in dangerous situations. But some residents told the newspaper that the military vehicle is an unnecessary show of force in their largely rural county.

I grew up in DeFuniak and can’t imagine what use the vehicle would have.
Still, I guess getting it for free would sort of make you want one.
IF these vehicles are as heavy as thought in this article, I know LOTS of rural bridges which won’t carry this kind of weight.
Basically they're what made MRAPs obsolete. They cost very little. They're easy to make. They don't need military grade explosives (although RDX and HMX work best) dynamite works - just make them a bit larger. They're extremely effective against armored targets even at 50 - 100 meters standoff. They're very hard to detect and very difficult to neutralize.
If the government continues to use it's standing army (the thugs in blue) to treat the citizens like subjects of a communist tyranny, then sooner or later those who are being subjected to tyranny wil rebel with someting more condign than complaints on places like FR. And then it will get really messy because the government isn't going to roll over and give back the rights it has been vigorously stealing for the last hundred years.
Unless these MRAP’s come with a maintenance contract these agencies are screwed. The MRAP is a maintenance intensive vehicle with zero off the shelf parts. I worked on BAE Systems RG-33 MRAP and JLTV programs as a Field Service Rep. These agencies are in for a teal treat maintenance wise
Destin and South Walton County are a good distance from DeFuniak Springs which is the county seat.
DeFuniak is a sleepy little city and according to my best friend’s wife, who visited the town as part of a college field trip, the prettiest little town she ever saw.
No they haven't. They work for the GOVERNMENT, not the people, and most government types consider that the purpose of the citizenry is to support the government.
I’ve got two questions I’m hoping you have some general answer for, I’m just looking for some kind of rough guess.
If the vehicle is not intended to be used except for a freak event where an armored vehicle is the only thing that could approach a location to rescue someone, or to approach a barricaded sniper, could the vehicle be kept parked in a garage and kept workable for very little cost, for instance start it once a year, maintain the batteries and tires without any rough use, or mileage?
Also, what is the scrap value, could a sheriff pay $2500.00 for something that scraps out at a profit?
This is all just a great misunderstanding, the officers need to have this protection because of .........................dogs.

If you park it and only use when needed you can cut maintenance costs, but you will have to do the preventative maintenence on it. Yes the vehicle scrap value is WAY beyond the 2500 that was paid for it

Visible intimidation, period, but dangerous. Tanks next, yes! They already have/use tear gas and Tasers!

Somewhere I read wher that during WWII, guerrillas would dig up a dirt road in spots to make it look like something was planted there, when it wasn't - they planted the mines alongside the road where the tanks would go to bypass the obvious.
Also, when they didn't have any mines, they'd dig up the road where it bottle-necked for the purpose mentioned in the first post.
