Florida sheriff defends acquisition of surplus MRAP Published June 30, 2014 Associated Press

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. – A decision by one Panhandle sheriff's office to purchase a military surplus MRAP is being criticized by some residents.

The Northwest Florida Daily News reports that the Walton County Sheriff's office bought the mine-resistant and ambush-resistant MRAP for just the $2,500 cost of delivery.

Sheriff Mike Adkinson says the heavy-duty vehicle will protect his officers in dangerous situations. But some residents told the newspaper that the military vehicle is an unnecessary show of force in their largely rural county.

An Iowa City With A Population Of 7,000 Will Receive Armored Military Vehicle

Submitted by Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

I’ve covered the militarization of the domestic police force on several occasions on this website. For those of you who need a refresher, I suggest reading the following:
There are Over 50,000 SWAT Team Raids Annually in America
Retired Marine Colonel to New Hampshire City Council: “We’re Building a Domestic Army”

Video of the Day – Thuggish Militarized Police Terrorize and SWAT Team Iowa Family.

Moving along to the subject of today’s absurdity, the tiny city of Washington, Iowa with a population of 7,000 and 11 police officers, will be receiving a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle. Yes, they will be employing one of these in the field:

LOL. Lord Have Mercy, Mike! Do they need THAT much protection??? Are you going to have them drive around in tanks next?

If offered to the general public at the same price then yes the Sherrif’s dept may have one otherwise no. They should be offered to all at the going price, and without demilling or destroying the value of the vehicle. We paid for it, WE should be able to have it in the same condition as the police force.

Recently the Sheriff of Christian County, MO took delivery of one of these things. One never knows just when a bunch of Blue Hairs could break pre-historic and begin tossing things at people!

Just think about the upkeep costs of one of these monsters - how many municipalities really need something like this? What a waste!

This has got to stop.
Unless the Feds open up the sale (same price) and use to citizens then this is in fact creating the standing army the Founders tried to protect us from.
I guess that all the talk of beefing up Humvees in Iraq and Afghanistan has come back to bite us in the ass.
I supported it for foreign use to protect soldiers. I guess I was naive at the time to think it wouldn't eventually come back as an instrument of tyranny.

Our county just got one. Good for climbing around the mountains looking for lost hikers or wildfires. Not a bad deal for $4k

NRA Commentator Dom Raso Hearts Police Militarization. Again. Still.
By Robert Farago on June 28, 2014

TTAG reader JF writes:

It seems NRA commentator Dom Raso just doesn’t get the pitfalls of up-arming every cop in America to the point where they could fight the Decepticons. He’s made a new video [above] where he acknowledges the resistance to police militarization in his previous video. He states that he’s a civilian now and doesn’t want MRAPs on every street. Then he goes on to say that we really need MRAPs on every street. Because terrorists. That’s his mantra; that the military fights terrorists so the police need to be just like the military to fight the terrorists when they show up here. He must think it’ll be like that Chuck Norris movie Invasion USA where 500 Jihadis land on a beach. Of course he never mentions any of the abuses of police acting like military and treating all citizens like potential insurgents. He does ask anyone who disagrees with him to “make a video” and send it to the NRA. He loves to say “Crush Everything” and I guess he’s including most of the Bill of Rights.

The police is choosing an openly antagonistic relationship with the American public.
They forget who they work for.
