President Obama on Monday formally requested that Congress grant him additional powers to deport the wave of young people illegally immigrating into the country.
In a letter to congressional leaders, Obama also asked for more money to deal with the surge of people, mostly children from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, who have come to the border in escalating numbers. [READ OBAMA'S LETTER.]
Obama said the administration is working to execute a governmentwide strategy as the surge across the Rio Grande Valley continues, and is eager to work with Congress to ensure that we have the legal authorities to maximize the impact of administration efforts.
The lengthy letter did not say how much money Obama would request, but he expected to ask for $2 billion in supplemental appropriations.
The funding would help officials at the border deal with what many say is a humanitarian crisis. It would also help the administration hire more judges to give people hearings on whether they will stay or be sent out of the country.
Obama is coming under pressure from Republicans who say his pro-immigration policies have helped lead to the surge by giving people the idea that theyll be allowed to stay in the United States.
Hes also come under criticism from Democrats, who want the White House to relax deportations.
Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with Central American leaders to address the issue on Tuesday.
According to border control memos, authorities have arrested more than 47,000 unaccompanied minors between October 2013 and May 2014.

Deportation and buckling under pressure from republicans is NOT the impression I had from the whining, angry statement I just heard on the radio.
YOU'RE NUTS !!!
What’s wrong?
Did his pen run out of ink and his cell phone quit working?..................
Don’t give him one penny for his unconstitutional power grab. I love to see him whine.
Close the border.
Reminds me of when the emperor in Star Wars went to the senate and asked for “temporary” new powers to put down the rebellion.
The people cheered him.
“So this is how liberty dies...with thunderous applause.”
100% Deportation
Anything else is Amnesty
He already has the powers assigned to the executive branch through current laws. This should include deportation. Heck, we even have authorised a wall that never got finished. He could start finishing that tomorrow.
He has all the power he needs to deal with it the way it needs to be dealt with. If Congress refuses he’ll say the problem is all theirs. (And, it will work with the no-information voter.)
Deport, yeah right. The only place he’s going to “deport” them is to other parts of the US.
What the hell did he do with the money allocated to build the wall? Use it to lay a minefield instead!
There was a border problem when he took office in ‘09, why hasn’t he done anything about it since then?
Now where would they get that idea?
No funding without securing the border and ENFORCING current LAW!
Only if he uses the money to try the Border Patrol people who are kidnapping the invaders at the border, dragging them into America and “changing their diapers”.
There is no guarantee at all that he’ll enforce any law anyway.
Screw him.
