A new study by researchers at Stanford University is suggesting that making soda and other sugary drinks ineligible for purchase with SNAP funds could result in nearly a quarter million fewer diabetes cases in adults, and over 140,000 fewer obese children.

But Coke’s lobbyists won’t allow that to happen.

I'd settle for banning casinos and Crown Royale.

Food stamps should not be used for soda. That’s a no-brainer. Fact is, if food stamps recipients can afford soda, they must be getting too much money for food.

So could banning food stamps...Why do we pay people to eat if we have an obesity epidemic in this country? That’s as dumb as paying people not to work and wondering why unemployment is up.

I agree that food stamps should not be paying for soda.

My first thought was to agree that this was a good thing.

But they find ways to cash in food stamps for cigarettes and alcohol, so this won’t change.

It will just change their stat reporting. And lead to further corruption.

Baning corn subsidies would help too....

As would this as well, but that would make two voting blocks for the dem-o-rats very angry indeed, so they won’t do this....

We don’t buy soda because it’s a waste of money. That of course doesn’t stop the seven cases a week EBT crowd in the checkout line. Usually grape, fruit punch, or orange flavors.

They will just buy cart after cart of some food product that has a deposit for it’s bottle/can and waste food pouring the food out so they can get 5cents on the dollar so they can buy their sugary carbonated water....

Just like how some have been caught buying pop to empy the cans to get deposit to buy booze...

And, here Congress thinks that Amnesty is the answer....that's only going create a new crop of welfare dependent, obese folks unwilling to work.

Ban food stamps and see how fast our unemployment numbers go down...and how quickly illegal immigrants *come out of the shadows* and head back home.

A lot of seedy places will just trade food stamps for cash at pennies on the dollar. It ain’t that hard to find one.

I suspect a ban on soda would be beneficial. Most people using food stamps do use them to feed their families. They’re going to buy beverages. They’d actually end up with more money to spend on food and nutritional beverages if they didn’t waste it on soda.

so what!! food stamp recipients should not be able to buy soda, potato chips or any other junk food with my money (exactly what food stamps are- my money)....

let them purchase only water, vegetables and meat...

1) it’ll help reduce the health care cost (which we foot the bill for) since they won’t be able to eat so much crap...

2) maybe, just maybe some of them will say “the hell with this- i’ll get a job and buy my own food!!”
