BRUSSELS Defense and intelligence officials told senators at a classified briefing on Wednesday that they kept secret from Congress the pending swap of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for five Taliban prisoners because they feared for his life if the deal became public, a senior administration official said Thursday.
The Senators were told, separate and apart from Sgt. Bergdahls apparent deterioration in health, that we had both specific and general indications that Sgt. Bergdahls recovery and potentially his life could be jeopardized if the detainee exchange proceedings were disclosed or derailed, the official said in a statement.
Several senators said Thursday that officials in the classified briefing justified the presidents decision to swap Sergeant Bergdahl for the Taliban prisoners by suggesting that quick action was needed to save his life.

Secondly, HOW MANY MILLIONS OF LIVES ARE IN DANGER BECAUSE OF RELEASE OF THE BIG 5 FROM GITMO?
He was held in captivity by Islamic terrorist for 5 years and they just now learned that he life was in immediate danger ? How about the fact that Islamic terrorist rarely take captives. Our leaders are brain dead.
No, they are not brain dead. They are just muddying the waters and trying to create confusion to cover up the truth.
His life was in a helluva lot less immediate danger than that of those who tried to find him.
Especially since he had converted to Islam and dedicated himself to jihad at leastfour years ago
This could, however, become a bit awkward:
Gen. Failure: OK, Berghdal, the story's changed. Yer gonna have to play ball or it's back playing spin the bottle with a goat herd.
BB: Siryessir! So what is it, am I a CIA spy now?
GF: Nope.
BB: A victim of poor GPS skills?
GF: Uh-uh.
BB: A hero throwing myself on a grenade for my friends?
GF: Not exactly. You couldn't escape because they sawed yer leg off.
BB: But General Failure, both of my legs are just fine!
GF: Got some bad news fer ya, Abdul. (sound of a circular saw being revved up in the operating room)
So why wasn't the same consideration given to Ambassador Stevens ????????????????
It’s convenient that he’s “sick” and will be kept in “recovery” away from prying members of the press.
it probably was , because the Talibs allowed him to become strung out on heroin .... thus the sickly looking vids that would appear from time to time . Folks get that way on an unlimited supply of smack .
What’s the leak cr**. These negotiations have been going on for years....same dude....5 years later?? Who did this dude know??
They’re seriously going with: “The terrorists made me do it?”
Let me get this straight: a bunch of goat herding Muslim tent dwellers can force the most powerful man in the world to disobey a his legal obligations... Or else.....
Tie that bull outside, you effeminate panty waste of a President.
Does he have a rug and eat only Halal....You bet!!
I’d say his life is in more danger now that he is back here than when the Taliban had him.
Bull$hit. This was clearly a conversion to Islam PR stunt that didn’t go as planned.
officials in the classified briefing
Any Congressional notification would also have been ‘classified’. So, very little chance of the swap arrangement being made public.
Just like, if your health insurance you can keep your health insurance, period.
You Go NYT!! I shorted your stock yesterday and I smell a winner!!
Now this is starting to make sense AND stink even worse!!!
The PRIMARY objective of Obama was to have some release of some prisoners at GITMO but knew they had to “get something for it” and, conveniently why not tie in “bringing home the last U.S. POW in Taliban hands” - a TOTALLY POLITICAL “twofer”.
Burgdahl is really just an excuse for Obama’s attempt to “start cleaning out GITMO”.
What? Five years of immediate danger? And five brave guys died trying to find him??!! 0bama is a .......
You want spin? You can’t HANDLE the spin!
Here’s my humble prediction. The public will never hear from this Bergdahl, we’ll never see him again. His “condition was so precarious” he’s probably already “passed away, despite the very best efforts of top Army physicians”.
If I remember correctly, it seems that there were 4 men in Benghazi whose lives were in immediate danger - and they got a “stand down.”
