Remembering D-Day

This year marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy, France, and the long-awaited opening of a western front.

The year before, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin had repeatedly asked British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to open a second front on the Atlantic Coast of Europe, to provide his army on the east with relief.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the supreme allied commander in Europe, planned and carried out the liberation of Western Europe and invasion of Germany, code-named Operation Overlord. This large-scale invasion required hundreds of thousands of troops to be assembled and trained for amphibious landing. The plans had to account for beach attacks and required information on the terrain and weather tracking.

Before the invasion began, Eisenhower sent a message of encouragement and support to the troops. He compared the invasion with a "crusade" and noted that their goal was nothing less than "security for ourselves in a free world." He expressed "confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in battle," while noting, "We will accept nothing less than full victory."

He ended with a request for assistance from "God Almighty upon this great and noble undertaking."

The invasion began on June 6, 1944. It included nearly 3 million soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, some 11,000 planes and nearly 7,000 vessels carrying close to 200,000 tanks and other vehicles.

That night, Roosevelt broadcast his prayer. Biographer Jon Meacham noted, "the White House had distributed the text beforehand so that the audience -- an estimated 100 million Americans -- could recite the words with Roosevelt."

"My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer."

Imagine 100 million Americans reciting the words of this prayer with their president.

"Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.

"Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith. ...

"They will be sore tried, by night and by day, without rest -- until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men's souls will be shaken with the violences of war.

"For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate. They fight to let justice arise, and tolerance and good will among all Thy people. They yearn but for the end of battle, for their return to the haven of home.

"Some will never return. Embrace these, Father, and receive them, Thy heroic servants, into Thy kingdom.

"And for us at home -- fathers, mothers, children, wives, sisters and brothers of brave men overseas -- whose thoughts and prayers are ever with them -- help us, Almighty God, to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in this hour of great sacrifice.

"Many people have urged that I call the nation into a single day of special prayer. But because the road is long and the desire is great, I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent, let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to our efforts.

"Give us strength, too -- strength in our daily tasks, to redouble the contributions we make in the physical and the material support of our armed forces. ...

"With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogancies. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister Nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace, a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. ...

"Thy will be done, Almighty God. Amen."

There were more than 10,000 casualties among the U.S., British and Canadian troops, but the invasion succeeded in changing the direction of the war. Less than a year later, on May 7, 1945, the Germans surrendered unconditionally to the Allies.

Take the time today to say a prayer of thanks and gratitude for those who fought for our country and won.

My father-in-law was an ensign, (later a lieutenant) in the navy stationed aboard the Arizona. He spoke German, French, Spanish and Italian do, naturally, the Navy put him in the pacific. After Pearl Harbor he was transferred him to the Atlantic. He was not storming the beaches, obviously but did participate as a naval officer in the D-Day invasion.

He’s not just the only person I ever knew who was at both Pearl Harbor and D-Day but the only person I ever heard of who was at both.

A number of years ago I worked with a fellow named Chuck. I was in between jobs working as a maintenance worker at a local department store.

That year on June 6th he mentioned he was there at Normandy. He was a Coxswain on a Higgins landing craft. You think of the terror of one trip to the beach in one of them but Chuck made that trip 23 times!

The shear bravery of those men that day or, for that matter, ANY amphibious landing in WWII should never be forgotten.

Still believe there could have been found a better way to do the invasion(s) but I’ve never thought of what it might be.

By today's standards, taking those beaches would've been considerably easier. All of those German bunkers and machine gun nests could've been taken out with cruise missiles. Additionally, hovercrafts could've drove the Marines or soldiers right up onto the beach--no wading through surf over your head.

My grandfather was a Sherman driver on his way to Omaha when a shell hit his landing craft and flipped it (technically a lucky event compared to driving in). In the wait for pickup half of the men in his group froze to death in the water. He once told me that he got to watch the whole thing unfold right in front of him as if it were on tv. A horrible day.

He had 4 tanks shot out from under him and then an 88 took his leg outside of St Lo.

Bless all them. Whether they made it to the beach or not.

I meant by earlier 1940’s standards.

Dad was with Clark in Italy with his buddies being picked off from the Leaning Tower of Pisa which the Monument Men had placed on the Do Not Destroy list of precious artifacts.

He voted for Stevenson twice because he did not appreciate the way Ike conducted that Invasion in the least. There had been some talk early on of Ike running as a Democrat but my Dad said NO either way.

Thanks, Kaslin. My dad did his 6 in WW2 in the Pacific under MacArthur. Saw 5 major battles. He a T/5 and a PFC put the first US Flag up on Corregidor “THE ROCK” on a telegraph pole under sniper fire, where it flew 2 weeks, both received Bronze Stars for their Volunteering to do so, before the official flag raising Those battles were just as bad, just not as publicly known as D-Day. His Unit was the 503rd Airborne.

May God bless all who served and are serving. Keep them safe, bring them home. In Christ name Amen.
