By today's standards, taking those beaches would've been considerably easier. All of those German bunkers and machine gun nests could've been taken out with cruise missiles. Additionally, hovercrafts could've drove the Marines or soldiers right up onto the beach--no wading through surf over your head.

Dad was with Clark in Italy with his buddies being picked off from the Leaning Tower of Pisa which the Monument Men had placed on the Do Not Destroy list of precious artifacts.
