HATTIESBURG, Mississippi With final votes still being counted, Tea Party-backed state Sen. Chris McDaniel is poised to force a runoff against 42-year incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) in the GOP primary here, likely prompting a three-week dash to the finish of an epic race between conservatives and the GOP Establishment.
"Whether it's tomorrow or whether it's three weeks from now we will be victorious, McDaniel said during a speech to supporters here around 11:30 p.m. CT. Cochran did not plan to address his campaign rally, according to NBC reporter Kasie Hunt.
With 97.9 percent of precincts reporting, McDaniel was up nearly 3,000 votes at 49.6 percent to Cochran's 48.8 percent, according to the Associated Press.
The likely runoff follows an all-night nail-biter between Cochran and McDaniel that saw each candidate see-saw between winner and loser. McDaniel supporters at an event here were ecstatic, cheering loudly at the television whenever new results come in while a country rock band and bagpipe band take turns entertaining the crowd.

Maybe there should be an effort here to raise funds for McDaniels.

I believe that your time would be better spent trying to line up Cochran supporters and Democrats for the runoff. I do wish you well.
Slick Willy fits that description perfectly and he was proud of it. Viagra must be wonderful stuff..... I'm sorry, I just HAD to!

Chris McDaniel | 153,030 | 50%
Thad Cochran (Inc.) | 151,052 | 49%
Thomas Carey | 4,771 | 2% |
That 50 is arounded 49.55%
Close, but no cigar on this round.
So who are the Carey voters going to gravitate to? McDaniel or Cochran?

McDaniel and Carey are both born-again Christians with strong ties to the Church Community. I’m thinking Carey’s folks will go for Chris.
All Chris has to get is 50% plus 1 vote.
I wouldn’t be too worried, the TEA Party has, as far as I can tell, won every run-off they’ve been in, and by large margins.

Wow! That’s true. Thanks for the reminder.
What happens in the run off (if there is one) if the votes are still just as close as of right now?

Then there will be a “Plurality” Winner. Whoever gets the most votes between the two candidates.
As much as I loathe Clinton, GHWBush deserved to lose. He was the anti-Reagan. And no runoff would have turned his 37% share of the vote into a 50% +1 share.
When is that woman Lindsay Graham’s primary?
A voter who votes in the primary of one party may not crossover to vote in the run-off of another party.
Just like Texas. Anyone who did not vote in a democrate primary, can vote the republican run-off. Voting in the original primary is not a requirement.
Some of UR wrong if someone did not vote yesterday they still vote in run off. Its not just those who voted yesterday who vote in run off.

Open primaries are the most insane thing I have ever heard of.
Runoffs are bad news for incumbents and the establishment. Cruz would not be a senator for Texas without runooffs. There have been several now that have unseated the GOP-e candidates. Expect there to be a major establishment push to get rid of run offs.
beware another murky vs. joe miller scanario.

Thanks for those links. So, a voter who has voted in one party’s primary can’t cross over and vote in the other party’s primary runoff election which means no voters in the democrat primary can now vote in the runoff but what about voters who didn’t bother to vote? They would still seem to be eligible and since Cochran already asked Dems to vote for him I can see his campaign targeting Dem voters who didn’t participate in the primary.
