HATTIESBURG, Mississippi With final votes still being counted, Tea Party-backed state Sen. Chris McDaniel is poised to force a runoff against 42-year incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) in the GOP primary here, likely prompting a three-week dash to the finish of an epic race between conservatives and the GOP Establishment.
"Whether it's tomorrow or whether it's three weeks from now we will be victorious, McDaniel said during a speech to supporters here around 11:30 p.m. CT. Cochran did not plan to address his campaign rally, according to NBC reporter Kasie Hunt.
With 97.9 percent of precincts reporting, McDaniel was up nearly 3,000 votes at 49.6 percent to Cochran's 48.8 percent, according to the Associated Press.
The likely runoff follows an all-night nail-biter between Cochran and McDaniel that saw each candidate see-saw between winner and loser. McDaniel supporters at an event here were ecstatic, cheering loudly at the television whenever new results come in while a country rock band and bagpipe band take turns entertaining the crowd.

Obama’s boy survived to live another day. I hate to think what the White House is going to do the next three weeks.
Pray and vote!
Why does there have to be a run-off? Does someone have to get over 50% to be declared a winner? If McDaniel got more votes that should be it, shouldn’t it?
No worries, this is a big victory for the Tea Party.
Because no one got 50%+1.
Before any complains: Remember that run-offs are the reason Ted Cruz is currently a U.S. Senator, instead of David Dewhurst.
“Obamas boy survived”
I don’t believe Senator Cochran is obama’s boy, I believe he’s Haley Barbour’s boy. You know there has to be a “king lobbyist” behind the “king of pork”.
It's a shame that doesn't apply at the federal level...Bill Clinton may have never been President under a '50% + 1' scenario...
(sarc tag)
What puzzles me is why would half of Mississippi's Republican voters vote for a faithless, senile, old fossil, who doesn't even live in the state anymore, over a younger, more dynamic Conservative candidate. Do they actually buy the crap sandwich that the GOP-E is selling them?
The national popular vote does not elect our Presidents.
It is an open Primary. Cochran was openly advocating that Democrats cross over to vote for him. This is the prime reason I hate open primaries.
That’s not how we do things here in the South. Winner needs 50% (rounded down) + 1. This is still a huge victory for the TEA Party. McDaniel should easily win the runoff.
Fortunately, the runoff is open only to those who voted in the primary. It’s not like Democrats can now show up en masse to vote for Cochran.
I am quite aware of that...
Does anybody know who got the 1.6% which went to neither of the front-runners?
I imagine the R establishment will pour money into the effort to keep Thad in office. Maybe there should be an effort here to raise funds for McDaniels.
Uh... your snarky isn’t working today. You totally blew past the point that ‘who knows what evil?” was making.
“It’s a shame that doesn’t apply at the federal level...Bill Clinton may have never been President under a ‘50% + 1’ scenario... “
He was implying that if, yes IF, this scenario applied to the Presidential election, Clinton never would have been elected. We all know all about the Electoral College. Thank you for playing.
Do you have a reference for that?
I agree.
2 questions...
Does the Mississippi repub party have open primaries?
If “yes” above, who are the dems voting for?
