Savage Hemorrhages Hannity’s Audience: New York’s WABC Loses 50%, Chicago Down 59%

It’s the kind of conservative media story only conservatives understand.

The latest numbers are out for Michael Savage’s radio show. Recall that Savage was a key player in the battle between Sean Hannity and Cumulus radio. A battle that had an exasperated Hannity finally firing Cumulus, as reported here in NewsBusters at the time. But not before Savage, whom Cumulus had in the wings to replace Hannity in the latter’s Cumulus slots, took shots at Hannity, gloating at taking Hannity’s slot.

The Savage numbers tell a revealing tale of conservatism in the media. So let’s start with the brand new numbers themselves, numbers supplied by Nielsen Audio. They are the numbers for April – last month -, and cover 52 of America’s major radio markets. We will directly compare them here with Sean Hannity’s last numbers before being replaced on Cumulus stations - which is to say Hannity’s numbers for December, 2013. The percentages cited – again, these are from Nielsen Audio (formerly known as Arbitron) – are nothing if not startling.

He still plays “you Don’t Own Me.” I looked up Klaus Nomi on YouTube and am ad to have been introduced to him.

I found him to be an arrogant and unlikable person.

It came through on the radio too.

Did you know the democrats say the republicans are for dirty water? And John Kerry served in Viet Nam?

“Are mainstream companies that afraid of a liberal backlash? Or is something else going on here?”

It has always been the case. Talk radio is blacklisted by liberal corporations with very few exceptions. The better (more hard hitting) shows used to sell books from guest authors in their breaks, but after 1995, everything became totally conformist.

Prior to the well forgotten 1/1/00 scare, some of the shows really went wacko and started selling bags of oats and generators and water pills. You can still catch a few of those shows around. The more a show based its persona on selling that stuff to the rubes, the better chance that show had disappeared when the millennium kicked off just fine.

I used to listen to public radio stations all the time in Montana. The Billings one was especially good.

You have to remember once you deduct for commercials, a half hour show is about 22 minutes long and a one hour show 3/4 of an hour.

I don’t really know, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it has to do with the political inclinations of major corporations.

It’s my impression that most corporations at the executive level are politically liberal. Or they simply have no values, which these days amounts to the same thing.

Whatever the case, the commercials do seem to have a sort of monolithic quality which doesn’t match the diversity of the audience. This seems to negate the assumption that free market principles are at work.

I love Roy Masters too Fabian..though sometimes find myself asking if I heard him correctly,,because an occasional bit of strange advice will come out.

But he is very, very smart and as you say, way ahead of the others.
The mainstream talk show hosts have become almost unbearable to listen to. He talks about low information voters..but Rush, that’s who you are appealing to! If he says, “by the way” one more time..and highlights the phony calls in from kids about is books and tea promos!

The banter with crew and family on Hannity and Beck is beyond annoying and infantile. Most of us informed Conservatives simply do not have time to listen to gibberish. We know how bad the administration is and what dire shape our economy and country are in..
it’s not an election year..BORING!

Besides Masters, the only talk show host worth his weight in gold is Mark Levin. Night after night he nails it(and the libs), he is fearless and a brilliant lawyer and Constitutionalist. Ascerbic and funny. You betcha.
You can have the rest of ‘em.

“Are you aware that the nasty feud he has with Mark Levin is heating up again?”

Savage would bait lesbian callers during his KGO days. He was crude, quick, and nasty. He and Bernie Ward had a horrible feud and Savage spent days gloating on his national show when Ward was arrested and jailed. Savage read vulgar transcripts on the show that meant nothing to his national audience, but represented a huge resentment from his early days.

Levin does a decent monologue, but his later hours (at least when I listen) are often long winded renderings of economic reports and statistics that appear to come from the Heritage Foundation. He cruises into them the way Rush cruises into his in segment commercials. I can recommend curing chronic insomnia by listening to those economic reports by Levin on podcast.

Lastly, Levin and Hannity are great friends. So a sworn enemy of Hannity’s is likely to be on the outs with Levin also. I always enjoyed Levin far more as a guest on the Hannity show than I ever have listening to his own show.

Can't get Savage so haven't listened for years. About 10-20% of Hannity is worthwhile the rest is crap. Only listen while at work cause someone else does.

Dupree is a lib apologist.

After coming out for amnesty and telling us that he can disagree with his rich lib buddies and then go out and party with them when they would put you and me in a camp...

Levin has always been head an shoulders above along with Quinn and Rose. Can't wait for them to come back.

Hannity is boring, but Savage is mean and awful! I now turn the station when Savage is on.

He doesn’t even bother with “like and admire” with Sarah Palin.
This week he said that Ted Cruz was unpopular and didnt play well with others(not his words but the gist) in the U.S. Senate and the same was true of Obama but that Hillary was a well-liked senator. He suggested that neither Cruz nor Obama have adequate relevant experience to be pres.

I do not look for Cruz to be on his show. I don’t think Cruz bulls***s around with people like that. That will free up more time for Medved to have Dan Savage or somebody on again. I could be wrong.

Christine O’Donnell went on the show after he had card her Christine O’DumDum and loser.

Someone who knows..said that Rush is far more affected by his hearing problem than he lets on to his listening audience.

That may have something to do with the change...exercising more caution, less humor, etc..

I remember the Bernie Ward business. He was really gloating.

I know that Hannity and Levin used to be good friends, but wonder if things may have cooled a bit.
