Northwestern University continued to stumble over diversity issues this week as Mexican students voiced disagreement with a campuswide letter that advised students not to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by engaging in racially-offensive activities, such as eating tacos and drinking tequila.
The letter was sent to students via e-mail, and published in The Daily Northwestern last week. Leaders of Alianza, a Latino student group, and the Associated Student Government called on students to remember that Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexicos victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. It is not a day to throw a sombrero-themed party, they said.
Some of our peers choose to throw Mexican-themed parties that are culturally insensitive, offensive, and detrimental to the Northwestern community, said the letter, which noted that this was a problem year after year. Drinking tequila shots, eating tacos, and wearing sombreros do not commemorate Mexican culture; on the contrary, that offends, marginalizes, and isolates many of our friends, classmates, and community members, and casts our entire community in poor light.
The two Alianza presidents who signed the letter are not Mexican, according to The Daily Northwestern.
Their recommendations were quite a shock to Northwestern students who actually came from Mexico. Several of them fired back recently.
Id like to say that I proudly embrace my tacos, tequila and sombreros, wrote Ruben Antonio Marcos Bours, a Northwestern student, in a statement. To me, they are a key part of my childhood, growing up in Monterrey, Mexico.
Another student who grew up in Mexico called the letter over the top.
The people who wrote it had a good intention, but their perspective is different, said Pablo Garcia Romero, a Northwestern student, in a statement.
Alianzas letter was no more popular among non-Latino students.
Ill probably still go to Chipotle and drink Corona tomorrow, but I do that like everyday is it still offensive? asked one online commenter.
Realizing that the letter was poorly received, representatives for Alianza and ASG confirmed that they are drafting a new letter that will better explain their position on Cinco de Mayo sensitivity.
Were not trying to pass judgement on the role tequila or tacos have in the Mexican culture, said ASG president Ani Ajith. It comes down to context and intent.
Screw you, don’t sit there and tell people when, where, how, and why they should be offended... you’re not that high and mighty.
To: Obvious Marshmallow Major Student Group
Shove it.
To: Fellow Partiers
Pass the tacos and booze.
We have had it with libs.
Prepare for war.
Not quite the way I view it.
I’m sick of anything not American. If there must be any puff-up of any one, it must be all. I’d rather stick to just us, thank you very much, rather than 20 celebrations of “Anything Not American”.
Back Home they used to hang a goat up in the front yard cut it’s throat and then skin it and cook it and have big Fiesta!! The old ladies on the block were like super Po’ed every year! Some because the kids in the neighborhood saw the goat slaughtered.
I get the feeling many here are not reading the article.
We all knew about the group that issued this warning.
Primary point HERE is real Mexican students did not take kindly to the stupid letter warning speaking for them.
Glad I noticed this post, not having tacos until Tues, but I would have forgotten to have a glass of tequila today! And tequila is always best just over ice, anything else ruins the flavor.
So...they dictate to all other ethnicities what they can and cannot do, telling them what they can and cannot eat and how they can and cannot celebrate. Then they wonder why people are “racist” against them.
Pointing out absurdity by being absurd? It works, if that’s the case.
Are Tacos Mexican, or they more of a Tex-Mex concoction? Like pizza is really American?
Anyway, Americans can eat anything that tickles their fancy! So says a German-American. If folks can drink beer and eat brats with sauerkraut during Oktoberfest, then why not eat tacos on May 5th?
Getting tired of all the foolishness in MN. Personally, that is what makes the USA so unique with all our various ethnic foods. Ain’t it great?
its not the MAIN point - quit being obtuse in a pathetic attempt to justify your first misplaced post.
The main point is the idea that this would be offensive to anyone on any day under any circumstance. Google “main” if you don’t get it.
Where do they think hamburger comes from?
How many lilly-pantied guilty whites will conform to this nonsense?
I miss the Frito Bandito.
That photo is a critical mass of estrogen and lack of IQ.
They are really scraping the bottom of the barrel to find something that is ‘offensive’.
Its just getting comical.
People should do a B&E to celebrate May 5th.
LOL! Is it time for my meds or yours?
Like all the fake Indians that are incensed by team logos . . .
