LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday Clippers owner Donald Sterling will be suspended for life and fined $2.5 million in response to the racist remarks he allegedly made in a recorded audio clip.

Silver spoke to the press at 11 a.m. news conference from New York, stating he will “do everything in my power” to force the sale of the Clippers.

“The hateful opinions voiced by that man are those of Mr. Sterling. The views expressed by Mr. Sterling are deeply offensive and harmful. That they came from an NBA owner only heightens the damage and my personal outrage,” Silver said. “I am banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers association or the NBA. Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices, he may not be present at any Clippers facility, and he may not participate in any business or decisions involving the team.”

“I’ll have those n*ggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years.”

— Lyndon B. Johnson to two governors on Air Force One according Ronald Kessler’s Book, “Inside The White House”

I guess LBJ could never own an NBA team.

Where are the people who were up in arms that Linda Tripp recorded monica against her knowledge? That was the big sin for many if them, not what Bill had done. Where are these peoples outrage that this was a private conversation taped without his knowledge?

You forget that lawsuits have NOTHING WHATEVER TO DO WITH LAW, but are only about winning a jury over. ANYTHING is possible with a jury.

I wonder if this Sterling is a big DemocRat donor. Wouldn’t that be something.

Extremely big, but that was then. He's 81 years old. They've wrung about as much out of him as they can get. Now they're going to force him to disgorge the team and hand it over to Magic Johnson.

This whole thing was a setup. One of Magic's hoes is the one who made the recording. I wonder how much he's paying her? Maybe she gets to be one of the co-owners of the Clippers?

It seems that he’s being punished for his thoughts - - thoughts which are swirling around many people’s heads.

Flagg I am thinking exactly like you are…..obviously the NBA thinks that their conduct language for owners and the auspices of the commish’ office gives them the latitude to do this - but remember, Sterling is a personal injury trial lawyer….he’s a litigious bastard by definition. This is going to get interesting.

It's apparent to me that the NBA has weak lawyers.

I doubt the NBA can legally make Sterling sell his team, and consequently, will not be able "suspended for life" from the league unless the other owners vote to remove the Clippers from the league to ostracize Sterling.

“Why, because of WHO is representing them, or the merits of the law?”

The merits. There is a binding contract (the NBA constitution/by-laws), and the league acted within the scope of its authority under that contract.

The zeitgeist wins. We no longer are entitled to our beliefs… whatever they are; political; religious; personal.

We are no longer a free people.

Everything must conform to the state, and the mob that the state enslaves to it’s will.

And Christians laugh when I tell them real persecution is right around the corner here in this country.

He cannot do that. Besides, the teams value is like 500 million plus…..don’t think he would even if he could.

“If I were Sterling I would fire everyone and shut the team down.”

The team is valued at over half a billion dollars. He is not going to just walk away from that sort of money by shutting the team down.

You said: If I were Sterling I would fire everyone and shut the team down.

You have half a billion bucks to burn? I suspect Sterling doesn’t either.

When asked why he wouldn’t rent to blacks he replied, “They smell bad and attract vermin”. So the NBA and players are just becoming aware of his racism?

I doubt the NBA can legally make Sterling sell his team

They can, by a three-quarters vote.
