NBA Suspends Clippers’ Owner Donald Sterling For Life, Imposes $2.5 Million Fine
CBS LA ^ | April 29, 2014 | Unattributed

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday Clippers owner Donald Sterling will be suspended for life and fined $2.5 million in response to the racist remarks he allegedly made in a recorded audio clip.

Silver spoke to the press at 11 a.m. news conference from New York, stating he will “do everything in my power” to force the sale of the Clippers.

“The hateful opinions voiced by that man are those of Mr. Sterling. The views expressed by Mr. Sterling are deeply offensive and harmful. That they came from an NBA owner only heightens the damage and my personal outrage,” Silver said. “I am banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers association or the NBA. Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices, he may not be present at any Clippers facility, and he may not participate in any business or decisions involving the team.”

They other owners may have but Sterling could drag this on out of spite. He still owns the Clippers where the owners could remove the team out of the league by banishing the them. They, the NBA, can’t sell the team for Sterling.

They are franchise owners and generally don’t do anything to piss off other owners

Revenue is shared. There is a salary cap. These guys cooperate with each other and aren’t really “competitors” in a business sense

If I were Sterling I would fire everyone and shut the team down.

That's like taking half a billion in cash and setting it on fire. I don't care how rich you are that's not really smart. They want him to sell and he will eventually.

The right to suspend an owner is part of the NBA Constitution, and not the Bylaws.

What about his former squeeze? Didn’t he bring charges against her for embezzling 1.8 or 2.8 million dollars from him?

So what, now that he is not PC, crimes against him don’t count?

“Magic” Johnson (should be infected johnson) is behind this, have no doubts. The little ruca he hangs out with was also spotted around a lot of Dodgers when his billionaire backed group purchased them. Then suddenly a Yahoo article today about how this can allllll be atoned for, if the clippers we’re only sold to johnson.

I read elsewhere that he is indeed a big democratic supporter with large amounts of money. It dawns on me that he has been known for years to be a democrat money well. I have visions of the rich in Roman times enjoying the blacks fighting each other, now and then a white person, in public rings of physical contests. What was news to me is that the guy is a lawyer albeit an old lecher.

Yeah.... there is no comparison to this case and the salary cap against Jerry Jones. This is a lifetime ban. The NBA has pulled the nuclear option as much as they feel like they can. I’d tell them to take a hike and do whatever I wanted until a court told me different.

From what I see so far they are using a tape that was illegally obtained and accessing a fine and expulsion for an act that is not illegal.

Sure this one will hold up in a court where real laws are enforced and are the standard.

What he said there is no defense for but his words were not illegal they were stupid. So I guess that now we can financially ruin someone for saying stupid things.

This has gone from being an example of a public figure showing very poor taste to one of a socialist lynching.

I do not think I'm on board for any of this. In fact I do not believe that our national ideal are supported by this reaction.

This idiot has the right to freedom of speech right up to the point where he violates the racial sensitivities of others. He broke no laws. His sponsors should pull their support, but beyond that the market place should control what happens to him.

Now we have black players saying that the NBA should be an all black organization. This line of thought is more racist than that of the idiot who started it all.

The bigger issue is the idea of forcing Sterling to sell the Clippers. If the NBA can do that, are any of the owners truly "owners"?

Yes. They are owners of a franchise. If the other NBA owners vote to force him to sell, and he refuses to actually sell the team, they could just strip him of his franchise - he woud still own the facilities, etc., but he would no longer own an NBA franchise.

Which the NBA has the right to do and Sterling has agreed to in signing his franchise agreements.

This is easily enforced by the NBA by with holding revenue sharing dollars from Sterling

It was committed by the rodeo cowboy who had an 0bama mask. Also, Paula Deen many years ago.

And Trent Lott.

Lott at Strom Thurmond's birthday was Ground Zero for racism as unforgiveable sin. And all that Lott said was that Thurmond would have made a good president. The Left twisted that to mean that Lott was endorsing Jim Crow segregation.

Dick Durbin later called Robert Byrd a "national treasure." Nobody dared to equate Durbin with the KKK for his praising of Byrd.

He’ 82 years old? The lawsuit would take longer to resolve itself than his likely life expectancy. Especially if he keeps chasing 20 something bimbos around. :)

It would really impress me if the players returned their salaries as an act of protest. Why take his tainted money?

This is Political Correctness and the NBA having to appease their audience. It’s a moral joke and only the Devil wins.

Here is where the rubber meets the road. Will the NBA let Sterling sell the team to another white man? Maybe the group that tried to buy the St Louis Rams (with Rush) buy the team.

Yes, the Clippers began life as the Buffalo Braves, all those years ago.

Then, they became the San Diego Clippers, and eventually the L.A. Clippers on moving to L.A.
