The vast arid wasteland known as liberal radio is becoming even more barren. Loose-cannon lefty Randi Rhodes is pulling the plug on her show.
News of Rhodes' impending departure came in a terse statement from Premiere Networks, which broadcasts her show through 35 affiliates -- "[We] can confirm that Randi Rhodes has decided to end her national radio program. We've had a successful partnership with Randi for several years and we wish her all the best for the future. Premiere Networks will conclude syndication and production of Randi Rhodes on May 16, 2014." (Audio clips after the jump)
Rhodes spent considerable time on her show this week saying goodbye to listeners and outlining the rationale for her decision. She also couldn't resist taking swipes at Al Franken and Rachel Maddow, her former colleagues at now-defunct Air America Radio, especially Maddow (audio) --

There used to be an Air America station we could hear from Seattle. I'd listen to it a couple of times a week and found it absolutely bizarre.
The hosts like Randi Rhodes were negative and hateful in most of their commentary and I always wondered how a network dedicated to anti business and anti growth propaganda was going to find sponsors. I also wondered how their audience would support a sponsor since a good percentage were students and government dependents.
My answer came in two short years - the station died and went to Mexican Music.
When you are out in left field it is very difficult to hit rock bottom. Just when you think they have hit it they discover a new lower level.

Guest panelist on Fox “News”? Then, if she doesn't act too stoopid or inflammatory a seat on the morning show or The Five or even Special Report.
Her future is golden if she just answers the right door.

Don’t understand all the people saying she’s ugly. I think she’s great looking (or was, anyway). I was surprised to hear she was a scratch golfer. So, she’s not all bad.
OTOH, I used to hear her in Florida ‘98-’01. She was seriously unhinged. Not in a “I like to get angry @ this lefty!’ way. More a “This person may be a threat to herself and others” way.

I was fired by Randi Rhodes via e-mail. I worked on her show back in the 90s as a board op and call screener on her show when it was on WJNO. I used to load up her screen with republicans and conservatives. My argument with her was who wants to listen to an echo chamber all day? Put up a debate! This was all during the Clinton impeachment hearings and scandal.
Everyone did her homework for her and remember at the time the Internet was nowhere nearly as developed as it is today. Not even close. She did all of her reading from the NY TIMES.
I miss SoFla talk radio from that era. It was wild!

I met her originally as an intern at 103.5 WSHE where she was a rock jock in the late 80s and early 90s until the format switched and she was fired. She was obsessed with with Jack Russel from Great White.
hardly knowing her is as bad as knowing her. yuck
