The vast arid wasteland known as liberal radio is becoming even more barren. Loose-cannon lefty Randi Rhodes is pulling the plug on her show.
News of Rhodes' impending departure came in a terse statement from Premiere Networks, which broadcasts her show through 35 affiliates -- "[We] can confirm that Randi Rhodes has decided to end her national radio program. We've had a successful partnership with Randi for several years and we wish her all the best for the future. Premiere Networks will conclude syndication and production of Randi Rhodes on May 16, 2014." (Audio clips after the jump)
Rhodes spent considerable time on her show this week saying goodbye to listeners and outlining the rationale for her decision. She also couldn't resist taking swipes at Al Franken and Rachel Maddow, her former colleagues at now-defunct Air America Radio, especially Maddow (audio) --

I retired in 2007 and had a 40-minute commute every morning, and I just had to listen to this thirty (forty?)-something adolescent.
It was so bad, it was good for guffaws every day, all the way to work. Or maybe it was all the way home, I can't recall.
Her political and social insights were what one would expect from a stoned, totally uninhibited 13-yr-old. And the program lasted almost 2 years!!!
Remarkable.
First of all, I don’t believe she quit.
Second, how stupid can a radio station’s management be to carry her show? Maybe they’re not that stupid and that’s why she’s “quitting”. hee hee
The flagship 100 watt community college radio station will be devisated.
And yet liberals feel free to give their opinions of how the country ought to be run.
Everything they touch is "run into the ground".

Rhodes bitter? Sounds like. But Franken made it all the way to the Senate and meaner little troll would be hard to find—though goodness knows he has enough competition among his colleagues in that body.

I looked over the list of thirty-five. There’s some things that you ought to understand.
Some of the thirty-five are simply a sister station in the same area of station #1, that delays the transmission to a evening hour.
From the south, there’s only around three stations that carry her. Most of her thirty-five are on the west coast. Few folks talk about the amount of listeners, and I’d take a guess that fewer than 150,000 folks listen to her on a daily basis, from the thirty-five stations.
Why slam Maddow and Franken? She’s stuck in a small market situation and making probably next to nothing on salary. I doubt if she even makes $80,000 a year. She’s been hoping for the past five years that friendships would pay off and she’d finally get moved into the major leagues. Franken didn’t ever help, and Maddow has virtually nothing to get her onto MSNBC. I would imagine that the guys funding her show talked up 2015 and an anticipated pay-cut, for her to stay on the air. She probably added up the time and future....thinking there’s nothing much to stay around for, and just retire.
It’s hard to stand in her shoes. Mostly nutcase folks listen to her show. There’s no national trends based on what she says. She doesn’t get invited to any fancy Democratic conferences to speak. No foundations ever offer seats or situations to her.
What a piece of excrement this Rhodes creature is.
Dam we got rid of RR down here years ago. She was banished to NYC where she belongs. Hope she doesn’t slither back here.

A number of years ago, her show came on right after Rush. Talk about night and day!
