Jews in Ukraine seeking escape to Israel over letter demanding they 'register' with pro-Russian forces that was branded fake by a rabbi
Jews in eastern Ukraine are so concerned over their safety after last week's alleged anti-Semitic incidents that they are seeking advice on repatriation to Israel, it was claimed today.
This follows fears over a leaflet distributed in the city of Donetsk which demanded that people over 16 of Jewish origin should register with the authorities, a sinister development that smacked of the Nazi-era.
It has since been branded a fake by the pro-Russian separatists it claims to represent, as well as one of the city's rabbis.
But some local Jews are also concerned about a Russian invasion, with tens of thousands of troops within striking distance of the Ukrainian frontier, said Alexander Ivanchenko, who runs Sohnut, an organisation assisting people to go and live in Israel.

Registration, whether of guns, ethnicity, religion, etc., always leads to confiscation and destruction.
That would be an optimal outcome for many.
I always thought Ukraine was a victim country. Does it have any dirty secrets?
That flyer was a hoax. Get that in your thick skulls, moronic media.
..................
Common sense, they're being used by both sides, and are at risk.
From the perspective of the individuals in the middle, that’s irrelevant.
Funny, but the only thing I hear about regarding Jews and Russia is that Jews are now being treated better than ever there (i.e., better than the czars or commies) - so I doubt it’s the Russians behind the flyer, most likely it’s the NAZI-style people that took over the country.

Plenty of dirt. No secrets.

Really?
Russian Jewish Congress: Anti-Semitism on the rise in Russia
24 January 2014
The number of attacks and acts of vandalism against synagogues, Jewish cemeteries and community centers grew in Russia in 2013, Russian Jewish Congress press secretary Mikhail Savin told the news agency ‘Interfax’ on Thursday. “A steady downward anti-Semitism trend has reversed for the first time in the past four years,” Savin said with reference to a report the Russian Jewish Congress issued together with the Sova human rights organization.
The document indicates that ten attacks and acts of vandalism on Jewish sites were recorded from January to December 2013, compared to eight such incidents the previous year. “The incident that caused the most serious concerns was the attempt on the life of Derbent Rabbi Ovadia Isakov committed by radical Islamists,” Savin said.
The authors attribute the growth in the number of anti-Semitic crimes to a general growth in xenophobic violence in Russian society. “At the same time, the role of anti-Semitism in modern Russia has obviously become less noticeable than in the 1990s and 2000s, when it was the principal essence of nationalistic propaganda,” Savin was quoted by ‘Interfax’ as saying.
The Russian Federal Communications Oversight Service issued four warnings for anti-Semitic articles in Russian media outlets in 2013, the report says.
As concerns the law enforcement practice, the report says at least 16 guilty sentences for propaganda of anti-Semitism were handed down in 2013. In seven of these cases, this propaganda was aimed exclusively against Jews and the rest concern xenophobic materials targeting not only Jews but also other minority groups. http://www.worldjewishcongress.org/en/news/14379/russian_jewish_congress_anti_semitism_on_the_rise_in_russia
Better than ever is a relative term. In 1948 there were about 2.6 million Jews left in the Soviet union, of which about 1.6 million were in the Ukraine. By 1957 the USSR had dropped to 2.6mm, 1957, 2mm, by 2010 the FSU (former Soviet Union) Jewish population was estimated to be 330m, down about 85% from 1948, the Ukraine 70m to 80m, down about 95%. Some will place the Ukrainian number higher by using the Nazi criteria of a prior two generation Jewish relative. Not sure that's indicative better treatment.
Funny, but the only thing I hear about regarding Jews and Russia is that Jews are now being treated better than ever there (i.e., better than the czars or commies) - so I doubt its the Russians behind the flyer, most likely its the NAZI-style people that took over the country.

You mean they aren’t being gassed or roasted in ovens yet? /s
Regardless of whose doing it, it’s wrong.
I don’t consider Muslim attacks as anti-semitic, since I don’t consider them to be Russians in the first place, and they certainly aren’t acting on behalf of the government there.
As to other attacks, it doesn’t seem like much - considering what they’ve dealt with over the centuries. Yes, an uptick, but it’s from a very low number to start with. Try being a Jew in France or Malmo if you want to know what anti-semitism is.
If I was a Jew, I would leave immediately for the US and if couldn’t get a visa to do that, would go to Israel, as that document tells them what their status is no matter if it was a legitimate document or not. During the Hitler years, that document could be signed by anyone, but that was Hitler’s view and he killed them. Thinking it won’t happen to you, is gambling your life and that of your family.
The US probably wouldn't work. These aren't Somali refugees, after all. Interestingly after the fall of the Soviet Union some Americans, George Will was a great advocate, felt the US should open it's doors to Jews now able to flee the Soviet Union. Particularly since the US was providing aid to settle them in Israel. His main point was that those emigrating in general were educated, employed individuals, a great many with degrees. Many in the sciences. His idea largely fell on deaf ears.
“Jewish presence” is the problem - it's not a Jewish state, they just have a presence just like they just had a presence in Germany. As an American, I wouldn't stay in a foreign country that just had an American presence, if war broke out in that country. I would not be one of them the government of that country had vowed to protect. I would be an outsider and would get out.
Note I said “if” I couldn't get a visa to America, I'd go to Israel. I don't trust Obama to let Jews in, whether or not they are highly educated and a valuable contributing person to society. Any Islamic radical Muslim would be welcomed to this country by another Islamic radical Muslim, the president of the united states.
Presence as an American is different than a religious presence. I post a lot of articles about persecution of Christians in Africa and the middle east. Were I a Syrian, Iraqi or Lebanese Christian, or Copy, I'd get my loved ones the h*ll out if I could. Sometimes you can't. At the same time I understand those who would like to maintain a Christian presence in historic lands. Jews couldn't, we couldn't even maintain a presence of any significance in Europe. I'm skeptical Christians will succeed in Islamic nations. But I respect their motivations, and think they should be supported. People should have paid attention when less than a decade after WWII Jews were being forced from homelands of two or three millennia. Wasn't going to end with Jews.
He is so so needs-to-be-gone.
