34 States Call for Constitutional Convention - and Possible Rewrite
Newsmax ^ | April 11, 2014 | Andrea Billups

Even with Michigan recently becoming the 34th state to call for a Constitutional Convention, it's not at all certain that a rewrite of the nation's founding document is close at hand...

Unless called to deal with a specific issue, some legal experts warn a "runaway" convention could create chaos.

"Let's assume that we get Congress to call for a convention, and we are deliberating about one item. Maybe that would stick. But how can you be confident that once you open the door to a constitutional convention, even if for one narrow amendment, that it won't just become a runaway convention?" said Steve Hayward, a visiting scholar in conservative thought and policy at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

"It seems to me that our Constitution may have problems these days, but I think most conservatives would be very nervous about opening it up to a new convention," Hayward told Newsmax...

“It is NOT a “constitutional convention”.
It is an Article V Convention Of The States to propose amendments to the Constitution.”

Thank you! At first I wondered how that many people could have so much trouble understanding the difference. I now believe the confusion is being perpetrated on purpose for the express purpose of scaring the people away from taking back the government that is supposed to be serving us.

Because if the states do not curtail the federal government, then it isn’t going to be curtailed at all.

There is a difference between an Article V convention and a Constitutional Convention.

The federal government has no say in this.

If a free people cannot trust itself to create rules that retain that freedom, then that free people is no longer free anyway.

Right now, this day, we are not free.

You must do what the bastard president tells you to do when he tells you that you must do it, or you will face consequences.

Please tell me how we are free.

If a bunch of tyrants show up to amend the constitution in ways that further enslave us, then I’d say it’s pretty damn safe to say that we are going to war.

Article V is the last civil chance.

This isn’t going to be reversed via elections at all.

No, I have it all right.

And you do too. It is up to us to fix it, and the way to fix it is via Article V.

That is our tool, not the tool of the federal government.

The reason the constitution is flawed is because it trusts men with power over other men, and man is flawed, thus the constitution is also flawed in that regard.

Really, think about it, if you wish to be free, why do you entrust another man with power over you?

What is the wisdom in that?

I wonder if Obama didn’t try to force a convention so he could take it over and use it to get some nasty amendment.

It is not fine because the constitution is not being followed by the federal government. It is our job to correct this situation and the methods of correction are provided in the constitution. Our constitution and form of government will work well for a generally moral and just people. Presently we are having probems with that. The constitution was written to delineate and limit the powers of the federal government. I guess you could cosider it a guide in that it provides an excellent basis for organizing a government but that is not what the constitution is. As far as thinking goes, I am guilty. I urge you to consider amendments to the constitution that will restore the limits on the federal government that have been conviently rationalized away over the course of a century or so. Such things as repealing the 17 the amendment. Eliminating the 16th amendment. Amending the constitution to protect privte property rights. Amending Article II to eliminate the right of the congress to write tax law replacing it with a national retail sales tax for instance at a rate of 10 to 15 percent set by the constitution. This will eliminate the corruption of our current tax code, prevent purchasing favoritism, eliminate the IRS, and eliminate the incredible waste of our current tax system. I would extend the tax methodology to the state and local level. To prevent buying votes an amendment to eliminate wealth transfer payments of any type is in order. Also, consider an amendment to Article III to prohibit judical review. This would eliminate the ability of the federal courts to impose their political beliefs upon the nation by interpreting the constitution. Anyway, these are some of the concepts I have considered that would in conjunction or in place of the Liberty Amendments would go a long way to restoring the limited federal government envisioned by the founders and reduce the paths, available to the mendacious, to corrupt our government and our nation.

Answered your own question, there. Who would you trust?

Democrats?

Republicans?

Who?

Every State's political machines are overrun with insiders who will end up controlling the process. The people who are out here in the cheap seats, longing for some semblance of real freedom generally will be Alinsky'd by both sides of the great machine, just as they are in local and national media now.

It isn't the mechanism, it is the people using it who are the problem now, and will continue to be the problem, no matter what mechanism is used.

Free? Hardly.

And what's worst, most people would be clamoring to escape anything approaching real freedom--which is how we got where we are.

Especially city folks, who are the first to cry out for some law or regulation, who, when they think they have enough (or the ones they have are totally ineffective) will come to impose their majority will on the rest of us, even though they don't have a clue about living past the end of the sidewalk.

The one thing that could really help this country would be to take away the Supreme Court’s authority to “interpret and change” the constitution itself. If the court rules an amendment is unconstitutional then leave it up to the states to make the correction.

I wouldn’t trust democrats or republicans.

Those words don’t really mean anything, they are lies.

There is exactly two groups of people in this country.

The ruling class and the ruled.

I would trust a free people to safeguard and conserve its freedom.

If a free people does not safeguard and conserve its freedom, then that people will not be free, and this is a moot discussion.

If we cannot trust ourselves to use the tool that our constitution provides us to control our government, then we are doomed.

That is all.

“In the current political environment, the delegates could end up doing more damage than good.”

I couldn’t agree more about the dangers of the present political environment. Althou i would point out that things are not likely to improve before collapse and that all your looking to save by doing nothing is the presently meaningless Text of the Federal Constitution.

I got a back up copy.

Your dreaming, and as much as I would like to share that dream, its not what happened last time.

I ain’t saying we shoulder do everything in our power to set specific goals of Reducing federal power and bring back accountability to Constitutional Text.

While absolutely refusing any other expansion. I’m just saying they could propose anything and we must be very carefully whom we send, because those amendments will be out there forever waiting for the right liberal campaign state by state to pass them.

Let us make sure they got more than a few good amendments in the mix for us to do likewise.
Like:
1: Restoring a meaningful senate.
2: Creating a court actually inclined to uphold the Constitutions limits upon Washington.

Still all sorts of horrors might come out of there from still greater impositions on how we live our lives to an open imposition of Communism.

WE MUST HAVE AN EXIT Plan where we can abandon any hell they might create.
