The hunt is on today for a black bear who mauled a woman at her home in an upscale central Florida neighborhood, leaving her with injuries to her face, legs and torso and requiring her to get 40 stitches to the head.
Terri Frana of Lake Mary, Fla., went to her garage Saturday evening to grab bicycles for her children to ride down to their neighbor's house when the attack happened, according to her husband, Frank Frana.
As soon as the children left, Frana, 45, saw two bears in the driveway. She walked to the patio area where there were five bears eating trash that they had pulled out of the garage, her husband said.
"The bear got up on [its] hind legs and started to maul her, opened its jaws and put her head in the mouth and dragged her towards the woods," Frank Frana said. "Somehow she was able to pull herself out."
"The bears were various sizes so we think it's probably cubs of different maturity and perhaps a mama bear," the Seminole County Sheriff's Office told ABC News.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said there was at least one bear involved in the attack but couldn't corroborate the report that there had been five bears.
Frana managed to get inside the house, said her husband. Her son found her collapsed in the living room and called 911. She was then taken to a local hospital where she was treated for at least three bear bites and several cuts all over her body.
Frana was released from the hospital Sunday morning and is recovering at home, her husband said.

I have friends in that area. Ond day, napping ont the couch when a bear walked through the pool screen and intro the living room. My friend was “sniffed” awake and about shite him self.
The bear freaked too and ran deeper into the house.
It was a mess.
They think he smelled the BBQ grill by the pool used the previous day.
Nobody hurt thank goodness.
There are bears all over the southeast.
There are a lot of bears in Alabama too. In north Mobile County, there are people that see them most every day in their neighborhoods.
A few years ago one showed up in the swimming pool of the Hard Rock Cafe. http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2010-08-29/news/fl-black-bears-20100829_1_bear-protection-laurie-macdonald-deer-hunting
“-————of course that was back when people were cruel, mean spirited, square, and didnt care about the bigger issues in life like the kardashians and their black boyfriends...”
..
I remember those days. Thank God we’ve moved past all of that. :-)
.
From the report it appears she is not very bright, must be an Obama voter. Rule one, if you see a wild bear get away from it, go inside. She stood in the driveway and watched them, I’ll bet she was walking towards them wanting to get a better look or even taking pictures.
Wonder if she has pictures of being almost eaten by a bear
Talk about going pee shy.............
There are big and nasty things in the state of Florida. Yankee voters are the least of them.
There are a lot of bears(and other creatures)up here, but they haven’t bothered me.I don’t put ANY rubbish out but if I had a problem,I’ve got The Solution!
So by 2nd week of June, nobody wants to shoot bear anymore and I stop baiting my barrels. Dang bear follow my 4 wheeler trail 2 miles back to my house, wondering why I ain't feeding them no more, ha ha. They show up at the beginning of my wood lot trail in my back yard. Quite funny actually. My dogs go nuts and chase them off. After 3-4 days they stop showing up.
In ALaska, bear are considered dangerous pests and shot on site all year long when they come around people. WE can now bait grizzly bear also, but they stay up on summits for the most part.
Twice over the years, I've had yearling (150 lbers) blk bears put the sneak on me. Come in real slow front quarters down, butt high like a cat on a rabbit in cut hay field, ears going back and forth like nuts. I was able to wave & hollar the one off at 6-7 feet, second time it happened, I shot the bear quick.
If you have bears hanging around your house, it's time to start shooting every bear there for a couple weeks; clean them out before you have a problem like this lady did. I bet she'll start shooting every bear she sees now. I have a buddy who has been mauled twice by grizzly bear, all scarred up from neck to ankle. This guy hates bear, wants them extinct, shoots poisons, snares every bear he can.
If that was a mother bear and cubs, she is lucky to be alive.
We have been to the Ocala area, beautiful country. I never dreamed there were bears there!
Might be the same bear I remember reading about. Gwinnett?
Yup!
there is a large population of black bears in central to southwest Florida. Unfortunately, we are encroaching on their territory and contact with humans is becoming more common. This one seems to have had bad outcome. Many of the Orlando suburbs (Longwood, Lake Mary, etc.) have bear encounters frequently.
I learned that as a kid. I didn't see them often, but have occasionally. Last one I saw was eating about 200 yards from the house on family property. I had my rifle ready if needed, but went back inside and watched from there. He ignored me and kept eating. I had NO problem with that.
My friend's parents are becoming snowbirds to Arcadia and invading from the small town Midwest. I'd say that the good news is that they aren't voting in Florida, but the good news is for me since they are are tea party voters and keeping their votes in Michigan. :)
Well, there have been several threads about some old broad down there who has been cited many times for feeding bears, one of which had to be killed.
When I first spotted this thread, I immediately thought of her......
As a side note, there was actually a FReeper here who was supporting her stupidity.......
There’s two words for women like that Up North. Bear food.
those are the kind of snowbirds I can welcome! From a native Floridian.
Where abouts?
